I read today that the going rate for a hive on the California almonds is $150-200 and soaring.

Yes, pollination prices for almonds are very high. Not high enough for me to take up pollination again. I pollinated apples for 20 years...600 colonies by hand. With more than a million colonies going to almonds, from all the southern states, the Central Valley where all the almond groves are, has become a sewer for bees.

If you can find Marla Spivak's TED presentation in Edinburgh, watch it. You'll get the idea of what's wrong with US beekeeping. Too much mono-crop agriculture.
