Get the fox shot and potentially save yourself a few lambs if later lambing is outdoors.

Shooting foxes is little different than spraying weeds or insect pests, except that it is a targetted application of lead, so not indiscriminately killing all sorts of non-target species with 'icides'

Can't see a fox - has a post been doctored?

As usual oljver trying to get a bite & cause more arguments, its about time his posts were removed untill he starts being civil. The fox posts were removed by admjn last night as they were posted to start arguments, obviously oliver seen them & jumps on the band wagon.

Ball not player jbg, it's your post thats argumentative, grow up.:rules:

Oliver Tractor

"As usual oljver trying to get a bite & cause more arguments"

I can imagine RAB is getting fed up being called Oliver, does JBG realise an Oliver 90 was the best American tractor imported into the UK in the 1940s. RAB is probably the UK's expert on this tractor.

As regards removing the fox part of my post, I removed it after Swarm pointed out it would be a bit provocative. Admin removed other posts and edited some after I believe a rude post from JBG.

I did not see the post as JBG in on Ignore.

My apologies for quoting him then MikeT, I've had this problem before where I end up reading something from a poster on ignore because they were quoted, most irritating!

I did not post anything rude at all? I only posted in reply to your post about killing a fox that killed a wild goose, then once i posted you edited your post?

Interesting fact hidden there.

We 'generally' only eat herbivores. The main exception being the pig, which is an omnivore. Carnivores, while eaten by some, are not part of our usual diet.

There could be a simple reason, such as efficiency of production, of course - converting flora to meat is better than 'flora to meat and then meat to meat'. Maybe some fish may be exceptions?

I suppose some might think of rook pie as another seasonal delicacy.

Any other examples?

Yes lots of the fish we eat are carnivores, and most birds we eat will not say no to a bit of live protein. My chickens were scrapping over a baby rat the other day.

Of course in other parts of the world snakes, dogs and cats amongst others are eaten.

It sounds like an evolutionary thing... if you eat things that have only eaten plants they are less likely to have diseases and toxins that will adversely affect you, an animal. I suppose that with fish they are significantly different to have fewer things that would transfer.

Against that argument, I know that a lot of cultures eat snake and lizards that are carnivores. There is also a market for chimpanzee meat and whale. (Sperm whale is a carnivore and chimps can even be cannibals.)

Perhaps the evolutionary advantage is that is easier to farm herbivores because they are less likely to attack you?

I see the craft fox (jbg) has gone to earth. this is meant as a joke why has he changed his location from North to Earth?

Badger ham?
Grey squirrels (lovely on the barbecue if you get a young tender one) will kill and eat young birds in the nest given the chance
Woodcock and snipe live on worms so I suppose they could count.

I can remember when I was young a Chinese restaurant was prosecuted for using cat in stead of chicken, The cat population of Swindon declined rather rapidly.

GRey squirrels now being sold in the Elveden farm shop as an alternative to rabbit which is in short supply

There's many clues in how we humans have evolved.
Comparing herbivores and carnivores, we have

- weak nails, not sharp talons/claws.
- flat teeth, not many sharp incisors.
- an alkaline intestine, not an acid one.
- a very long intestine, not a short one
- we produce a relatively dilute urine, not a concentrated one.

While we have evolved to being omnivore our bodies are still largely based on having a predominantly herbivore diet.
