Hello Peeps
Does anyone know of a good example of a video of a mating flight? or can discribe what it looks like? does it look like a swarm or do you see nothing?

Also
Had another swarm yesturday but they dissappeared (we caught them in a box but they vanished and it was only in next doors garden). We thought they may have come back to the hive until we saw an open queen cell. Would they come back?

We killed a new emerging queen and found another open queen cell which a queen had emerged from, we think (did not see her).

So we can assume that the queen from the open cell is still in the hive?

We throughly checked the frames for more QC and found no more, so hopefully we will not have any more swarms although our bees are very good at concealment of QC's!

Good news is that the original prime swarm queen is laying strong and we have her as a back up if anything goes completely wrong.

So we can assume that the queen from the open cell is still in the hive?

Afraid not.

Bad news is that the emerged queen was likely with the recent swarm.

Sorry Im confusing everything. I am so muddled now.

From the beginning:

Fortnight ago today (26th June) we had the prime swarm, which is now in a nuc box.

Checked hive and left one QC then. She was seen on wednesday 6th July so had hatched.

Had another swarm this saturday (9th July) and went through hive again and found 4 new QCs. One hatched and 3 unopen (swarm already left).

We then removed the 3 unopened ones from the hive but as we were inspecting, it appeared that the swarm was coming back to the hive but the sky was so full of bees we cannot be sure.

We thought the swarm had possibly the 6 july queen in.

hope this makes sense.

I will be very interested to see how a mating flight is described re numbers and behaviour etc - I have tried to find it here and elsewhere (mind you I am poor at finding things :)). The mechanics of the flight/mating etc is interesting - but similar to the OP we had what appeared to be a swarm from one of our hives described to us by an innocent bystander (startled too) but then we found no QCs on inspection and a very healthy number of bees....... we wondered if to an inexperienced eye a mating flight would be substantial enough to be misdiagnosed as a swarm?

Checked hive and left one QC then

That may well have been your mistake. Any queen cells constructed after that (as it would appear they have been) would be responsible for the cast swarm.

As I said earlier, you cannot 'assume'. You need to actually find out, or simply wait and see (which may not be the best course of inaction at this point in the season.

okay. Thanks RAB.

I understand.

When would you recommend we inspect next?

Thank you

Other half saw a queen entering the hive today (which was the hive that was swarming).
