Shocked to find a hornet in our wasp trap, flipping heck didn't realise they were so big, first one I've seen in real life, can see how they do so much damage

I hope it is a native (European) hornet and not an Asian one. Our native hornets catch bees on the wing but rarely 'do so much damage'.

I have seen the odd hornet this summer around my hives and in the woods on the heather. My neighbour just told me they had a hornets nest removed from their garage. My next door neighbour had two removed from his roof space last year. Nothing to do with me being a beekeeper!

Saw two hornets hawking out side two different hives today. Beautiful creatures... crap at catching bees tho :) it took one about 10 minutes to get a bee.

We get a lot of hornets around here and don't seem to have much of a problem. I've been watching a nest in our woodland develop this year and it's not that far away from one of my hives. So far I've only seen one hornet near a hive and that was picking up a dead bee to take away.

We've got used to the queen hornets, which are a fair bit bigger than the workers, hunting around our house in the spring. The only minor invonveniance is they often fly in through an open window and require some gentle persuasion to fly out again!

I had three nests within 20m of my hives a couple of years ago and the colonies were constantly harassed. It did not take them 10 minutes!
