Hi everyone

Does everyone wait for the frames to be fully capped before they extract and this is for normal honey not Osr or heather etc.

I don't have the piece of kit for telling me the moisture content.

If i had lots of supers and more kit then this would be less of an issue.

I had not expected things to turn out as they have

Thanks in advance

You can hold the frame upside down and shake down. If no nectar comes out it’s good to extract. If three quarters of the frame each side is capped it’s probably ok too. But do yourself a favour, spend the price of two jars of honey and get a refractometer off eBay.

Hell yeh ..a refractometer is i must especially when the Oil Seed Rape is in full swing..most frames are not capped at all but still 16/17%..

Is there much of a difference in the refractometers as ebay has stacks but they all appear for different things or is it one size fits all and they are just appealing for all markets

They will be for different things. As honey is low in water content then you will need one that does low water content.

Typically one that measures 58-90% Brix is suitable for honey.

I've extracted about six or seven super all of which were either completely cut or about 80% and it was completely fine!

I'm feeling sorry for your kitchen already !
