Hi CB008, try looking in the videos section at the top of the page and then polyhive's videos under contributors, how to use a spanset hive strap.Hope this helps.Sorry for the long winded reply but I don't know how to post a link.

Thanks - the video no 83 was just the ticket. Can't wait to get home this evening and have a go

Hmm yes hive staples... I used them once, and once only. Blo*dy nightmare.

The ones I've bought from T*hornes have Spanset stamped on the metal.

I picked up a couple of tie down straps for about £4.50 (cold have been cheaper) in Wilkinson last week as I thought they would do well as standby hive straps. I think they are 2.5m long (shorter than others, buy a bit), but in a pinch I could always put two together to tie down a bigger box.

Cheers PH - just watched the video - Spansets are certainly on the list of potential future purchases! There is minimal faffing around to secure them.
I am currently using some cam action straps which I find work quite nicely without tangling - they seem to retail for an average of £2.50 ish per pair. The ones I have were purchased/inherited a while back so they don't owe me much! I have a few commercial sized ratchet straps which get wheeled out whenever I bring another sick landrover home - needless to say they are highly unlikely to ever get used in anger on a hive.... I was recently given one of those mini ratchets by someone with less patience than my father who spent half an hour untangling it. By preference I wouldn't buy one or use one but as the saying goes, 'never look a gift horse in the mouth!'

I have both ratchet straps and cam straps. I tend to use ratchet straps for transporting and leave hives secured with cam straps in the apiaries, because they are very cheap and do that job passably well.

Ratchet straps when a longer strap is needed or for transport.

I use Spanset straps and they are very good, but sometimes they annoy me - sometimes not.

just picked up 4 ratchet straps from tk max last week, they look good but havent used them yet. look being the important word at this stage

Coincidently went to a winter talk this week at the local bbka all about moving bees for various reasons and that included 2 demos, one using ratchets straps and one tension straps. there were several people who didnt know how to use a ratchet strap and I hadnt even heard of a tension strap before myself.

Aldi stores have a pack of various straps on sale at the moment - ratchet straps, bungee cords and more in various lengths. seems good value at £7.99 a pack - if they are any good of course :)

If you are using wood why not just use copper hive staples, they are a lot cheaper and less trouble.

For the very simple reason you have to batter hell out of the hive and believe me if you do that and for some daft reason your block comes out then you better be damn sure you have a secure veil.

Staples belong in the arc.

The locking button allows you to open the ratchet on the strap to the widest opening possible so that it is open in one straight line. At that point the strap will pull out freely from the pin you threaded it through! I will put a couple of photos on in a minute if I can!

This shows you the pin through which you put the strap to start with

This shows you the button you press towards the spring to release it

View attachment 4475
This is not fully released and you still can't pull the strap out

This is the final position to unlock the strap. The pin will turn freely when you pull the strap the mechanism MUST be in a straight line to allow you to do this!!!!
Hope this helps

Never had that problem moving dozens of hives, just made sure the foam is in securely in the entrance block in the first place, they were cheap.

Bill?

No doubt it all works beautifully for you but I on here am trying to move beekeping forward into the 21st C and out of the ancient regime.

Spansets and so on are the modern way forward.
