Are there particular hive parts which are seen as essential or useful and what are they?
Entrance adjusters? Metal Frame Runners? Plastic Landing Boards? Pollen Grids/ Entrances?

That's a very wide question ... I'm not even sure what plastic landing boards are ... could you be more specific about what you want to know and why ?

The only ones on that list of any use at all are frame runners
I agree ... there aren't that many items in a beehive that actually wear out - I find frame runners sometimes rust a bit on my poly hives but they only rarely need replacing ...

Should have looked landing boards up as the apiarist gives the answer and with a Poly hive, I don't need one: Landing boards - The Apiarist

Oo I don't no it is nice to see a runway in action at beeline International Airport, tickets are free and you can drink tea and watch them all day long.
If the weather permits take of!
As to runners, some of my boxes don't have them and the maisemore cedar hives don't need them.
But I do like using them untill everything gets propolised up and you can't move the frames over them Any way.

Bees naturally don't have a board for landing on, but in the natural state, neither do they have a mesh floor and they are unlikely to have external access under the nest. At cooler times of year, when the bees come back to the hive knackered, the traditional, sloped "alighting" board gives them respite and prevents them from flying under and settling there.

A landing platform is not essential but neither is it pointless, especially when you close up the entrance on a busy hive.
I'm aware that underfloor entrances are in vogue.:)
