Was thinking of getting one to record swarm collecting. They are only cheap, but seem to be designed for cyclists. I'm guessing they have fixed focus on 20,30 yds away, so would it work?

I'v seen them on you tube and the rider sometimes looks at his speedometer and everything looks in focus

Lidl have one on the 28th but £90 inc 3yr warranty and no quibble return if not happy irc, might be worth a look?

Yes. That's true

I get my lunch from Lidl 2 or 3 days a week, so I might go for that one. An amazing assortment of stuff at Lidl!

Be aware that Lidl's offers are store specific.
If you look at Lidl's website and find your local store it will show you the offers for that store and when they are on.

Some of my sons reiends use gopro, which are good but expensive. I was in Cotswold Outdoor yesterday, and they had a pair of sunglasses with built-in video recording for £99.

Quite interesting to see one swarm collection, but I'm not sure I'd feel the need to record on a regular basis.

could be useful if you want to look at frames after an inspection.

Every swarm is different and you never know what might happen. Things often go wrong and frequently there is a new problem to solve.

You are right though, there is absolutely no need to do it! but then why waste time posting in forums. What is the point of that?

I've seen posts on facebook which were just pictures of bacon and eggs. A recent post was of a new pair of trainers. I'm not going to worry that I might bore people!

Now now!
Calm down , things escalate on here! :D :D :D

I'd be interested to hear how such a camera might be attached to a bee-suit.

Good for you Sixfooter - I too look for improving ways of collecting swarms, particularly those that create a challenge. Videoing each collection can serve well as a reminder as to how to improve techniques

An elastic headband over your bee hat.. (I have a head torch like that - ideal when working with two hands in confined spaces which are dark.. cars/lofts/cupboards..) Use it for running in the dark

I have a GoPro Hero3. Great camera but expensive as you say. There are all sorts of mounts available, including helmet mounts and chest harnesses; extending poles and tripods...

Not had a lot of time to really test mine out as I only bought it recently but it did give some great results during a 'spirited' ride on my motorbike :)

so would it work?
I have seen someone recording an inspection session with a camera attached to the breast pocket of their suit. A cheaper imitation of the "flip" type as I recall. If you wanted to try out the basics, the camera on a phone would probably be a starting point, a velcro strap to the breast pocket of your bee suit maybe.

I tried a £10 Chinese one from eBay that takes a micro SD card. Very small and light. Not great quality but I used it on my motorcycle once just to try it. It also came with a croc clip mount which just clip on a front pocket. That would work for a beesuit.

Would you say these cheap ones will actually focus well enough to see larvae?
