Hi, I have just started a practical beekeeping course after completing the 10 week theory course. planning on getting a hive up and running spring next year

Welcome to the forum - done thing the right way round, course and then bees - maybe if you can lots of practical experience at a local club or with a local bee keeper if possible.
Good luck with your bees when you get them.

thanks Galaxy. am doing the course at local association who are all very friendly and helpful.

Sorry didn't read the practical bit - you will learn a lot from practical experience - thing don't always go to plan

Welcome to the forum.
You may be able to offer your services to assist some of your new friends (clean gloves and beesuit may be required), which would be a great way to discover what really happens, rather than what is supposed to!
The more hives, bees and beekeepers you can visit, the more experience you will gain in a very short time. There isn't 'one true way' and appreciating why different folks do things differently is the most useful perspective. (OK just occasionally it might just be because they don't know better ... but if you can recognise that, you are definitely getting somewhere.)

It all sounds a bit fishy to me,
Welcome, are you reading plenty of bee books.

was given the Urban beekeeper book which piqued my interest and led to finding out more. for the theory course was using the bbka book. have just ordered Observing the hive.
