I have a couple of kilo of fondant that I was going to pop onto one of my hives. I have just taken it out of the cellophane and it is quite hard. Am I ok to still use this or is there a way to soften it?

You should find it is ok to use as it is. think there was a thread on this recently.
Moistening it a bit may help.

Torq is right, warming it will very likely soften it. You then need to fold in some water to replace that which has been lost. It won't be much as fondant is only around 11-12% water. Add no water and it is likely to go harder than before.

Bees won't particularly mind unless very dry, I suppose. They can cope easily with liquid or crystallised honey at 16-18% and fondant at 12%, so are quite capable of surviving on a sugar 'crust' as long as it is not too dry - think here of the bag of granulated sugar dipped in water and left on the crownboard as the ultimate emergency starvation avoidance technique.
