I'm a new-bee and have set up a box in the back garden in hope to attract a swarm... for the past three/four days we've had bees coming and going to the box and looking interested. This must have been scouter bees looking for a new home... this morning was looking promising, with a lot of activity going on. i've been out all day, and there is no bees what so ever...

Gutted, as I was convinced this was 'it' and now there isn't even a single one. :( Oh how I want a swarm of bees!

Welcome to the forum. I suggest you make contact with your local BKA, if you haven't already, and let them know. Build as wide a network as possible and you increase your chances greatly.

Also get in touch with your local pest control companies and see if you can persuade them to help you too,

All the best,
Sam

Sorry you are sad. i used to put out bait hives, but i have never had any luck, so Now I don't bother. What kind of box did you put out? Did it smell of bees? What did you do to attract the bees to the box? How high up did you put it?

There is research about what works best :)

have you been on any courses or had any expierence with bees only asking if you havent joined your local BBKA please do they give the best advise on how to attract a swarmbee-smillie

Patience is a virtue seldom found in women................. never found in men!

When you say "box" do you mean a proper hive?

Three bait hives set two swarms in five days all the bait hive were national brood boxes and the two swarms cover eight to nine frames
First time i'd bothered to do this and was amazed at the results
Don't give up just yet as the season is still early and there will be lots of swarming to come
And yes join your local BKA and do some networking to get your name onto the list thats how I started

Hi guys… thanks so much for all replying!

The box that I’ve set up is a small wooden one which I have the ability to place some wax frames in, which I’d done. I’d also placed a bee lure capsule inside and every thing was looking good. The box is probably about 2- foot off the ground.

I joined my local association back in October and have attended a couple of meets and talks. I’ve also just completed a beginners course where I’ve met some nice people who are just starting out. The one person I’ve met has had a call this week in fact with a swarm, so she’s happy though she admits she was rather persistent with the association and was constantly emailing and calling them. I don’t feel I can do that… haha

I think it’s just a case of wait and see and not to take it personally, that the bees didn’t stay! :blush5: I’m sure I’ll get a call soon.

Thanks again all for all your responses – I’m sure you’ll be hearing from me again very soon.

Small box is not good. You want a National brood box at least, and you want it up more, 5ft or so. Also invest in Lemon Grass oil.

:iamwithstupid: would also recommend you contact your local pesties, but also ask for their card with the promise that if you have or know of someone that has problem with wasps that you will pass the job over to them. Often they will get asked to destroy bee colonies, if you expect to have them instead of destroying them this is their income rightly or wrongly reduced sweetner is the promise of the wasp jobs.

A caste from another beekeeper has taken over a fresh new 14x12 box in my stack of boxes and the only attractant was fresh foundation (from K.B.S)

after a week it is on half a side of a 14x12 frame so i have dummied it into a three frame area in the 14x12 box

they have got a long way to go, but i will let them, i feeling kind and they were free :biggrinjester:

And my bait hives, not a single scout despite all the smelly old comb and lemon grass oil

obliviously i doing it wrong
