I have two colonies purchased late last summer, and they occupy two national hives in my garden. It is a new hobby for me and I find it fascinating. I have many books to help me out, but they all say different things, and the more I read the more hooked I become. It is lovely to sit and watch them doing 'their thing' and it has been a great way to see nature from a bees' perspective. I have joined many societies - BBKA and my local one for starters - and have a mentor down the road who helps me out when I need it. There are lots of bees in each of the hives, so winter has been good to them so far, and they have a pollen/fondant feed if they need it. It has been my most absorbing hobby so far. Love it!

p.s. the beehives in my graphic photo were taken in the wonderful Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. I would love my hives to have hexagonal roofs.

Hi Rob,
Welcome to the forum .there are a few newbies posting at the moment showing concern as we enter spring !
The next few weeks should abate their fears hopefully . Still, we've all been there ?
Hexagonal roofs go with hexagonal hives ,which are another ball game when it comes to management :)

Welcome Rob

Hope the season is good for you.

We aren't too far away, just down in Newbury.

In the case of the Hives in the Luxembourg Gardens the roofs are hexagonal but the hives are standard 10f dadants.(rectangular cross section).

Thanks for your very helpful reply. They are being well fed at the moment and have access to water too, if they need it. I will try not to 'fiddle about' and leave them alone, particularly when the weather is forecast to get colder. Thanks again.

Those hives look really good. Interesting to see the coloured navigation mark on the front of most of the hives. Good picture in Wikimedia Commons http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bee_hive_2,_Luxembourg_Gardens_2012.jpg

What a wonderful photo of those hexagonal-roofed hives. Thanks for that. Rob
