I read recently that they are not very effective. I think it was in a link from this forum to a bee science report. I can't find the link now but someone will know it.

Randy Oliver on his scientific beekeeping page had this to say about foggers.
"Oh my gosh! Fogging with a Burgess fogger. Lots of bees have been killed. Numerous fires started when the fog hit a spark from a smoker. Not to mention what oil fog does when you breathe it: “While repeated exposure to conventionally-refined mineral oils may cause pulmonary disease as well as severe dermatoses and cancer of the skin and scrotum, lipoid pneumonia is the major health hazard associated with highly refined mineral oils … While the course of lipoid pneumonia can be asymptomatic in some individuals, in others its symptoms can range from occasional cough to severe, debilitating dyspnea and pulmonary illness, occasionally ending in death.” (Palmer 1990). Think twice before you go exposing yourself to an aromatic toxic fog—there are safer ways to deal with the mite!"

Or are you using the ethanol Oxalic acid solution?

wow I didn't know oxalic acid catches fire. ? why do they use it in hives then anyone using what has been put above wants to check on beebase to see if they are allowed to use

Not Oxalic acid, fogged mineral oil which is what people used to dose the hives with. The latest is dissolving oxalic acid in ethanol which is even more flammable.
I was wondering which method you used with your fogger on your hives?

glycerine water and oxalic pig to mix but been using for a year now with no problems, do have to flush out machine because oxalic can block pipework.

Interesting.
Are you doing single/triple fogging? Any idea about efficiency?
I like the idea of something gas powered as easily portable. Much as I like my sublimox it does involves a generator and cables.
I'd really like something I can just stick in the back of the truck and forget about it until I need it...swarm/queenless periods etc.
The gasser Millet showed looks like the gas version of a sublimox....so be interesting to find out some more about that model and who makes it.

I'm going to make one when i get two minutes spare if it works and i have not blown myself up i will give you a test run..the bottle and burner i am thinking about can be turned upside down easily like the Sublimox so it can be used exactly the same i just need to work on some other materials .

I worked in the chemical industry for twenty five years, and have mild asthma so using oxalic acid as a fume is a no no to me, I vap about three times a year and five days apart as normal , but even it is in a semi water base I still wear a mask.

I have built a fogger but not used it yet with OA . didn't know glycerine would work in it?
