Frame sizes, what does it all mean??

Hi Guys,
dim new guy question comming up so be prepared.

I've been looking at frames and frame parts on the Thorne and other web sites and they are all described SN and DN, which I probably naively assume is shallow and deep national. What puzzles me is the numbers that follow them ie SN2, DN5 etc. Unusually Google has not shed any light on this so I'm turning to the real experts, you guys!
