i just bought sugar for syrup in a pound shop and paid 80p for a kg which would be cheaper if home made. why wouldnt you do it urself? because of the big amount?

another question as a newbee: when would you start feeding fondant?

the last couple of years I fed enough for them not to need fondant... I bought some surplus from CB a few years ago and never used it

Always good to have a good potential supply though!

I believe some of the commercial boys ONLY feed fondant. Might need their word from that though.

Fondant is a good feed for the new year if they require it.

Two things.

Making it costs time and money (fuel ) and mess.

Ask your local baker if they will add it to their order for you and the minimum order aspect is solved.

Mine was more than happy to oblige.

We've a local bee keeping supplier who keeps 12.5kg pack of fondant in stock at £15.00.

Not just the commercial boys ... my hives just get a large block of fondant inverted over a QE as described by Peter Edwards. A couple of hives are now ~3 weeks in and have almost finished a full 12.5kg block. Others have barely dented it and are still busy foraging. Last year most had finished it by late November or had reduced it sufficiently to just use a small eke topped with a block of Kingspan.

No large volumes of syrup to make up, no problems with leaking feeders and much less robbing. One visit for feeding and two quick visits for Apiguard ... simples :)

Ours got through last winter with only fondant. The bees seemed happy enough.

We got it through a local baker, who was happy to order it for us along with his own stuff. It was £12.50 for 12.5kg. I don't think it's gone up by much.

Last year our local bakers were happy to take £18.50 off you for a 12.5kg of Bako. The cost went up by £3 between August and November last year.
Was able to get some for £13.50 a box from a reputable source. ;)

Obviously it depends on your baker... Mine charged me £12-50.

some are obviously more even handed than others. ;)

As ever........... buyer beware.

Last year a couple boxes bought in November/December set me back £26 from Friars Pride in Peterborough. Still got it, so not checked current price.
