Yes ...solid crown on Erica. ..bollocks!!!..I'll try and get to it tomorrow...

Anno Steve. .knew the swarm probably wouldn't make it...but feeling very despondent and out of my depth...

So an update for all you helpful posters ..

Have the offer of several microscopes if needed and a friend who has lots of experience in examining as back up..

Cut back ten tons of vegetation to try and get a bit more early light and air in..got my hands on some thymol syrup this afternoon...
Young bees eating at the fondant...looking healthy and happy through the hole in the Crown board...

No more staining and very little to none dead bees throughout the day. .flying and bringing in pollen...agitated in morning but settled through day..

Am seriously thinking of moving them to polynuc Sunday as current nuc I think is gonna be a damp problem over the winter...we'll see what Sunday brings..

Many thanks to all..

It is entirely up to you but moving them into another hive this time of the year could do them more harm than good unless you have too, and can pull all the frames out in one go without splitting them, good luck whatever you choose, but me personally would leave them where they are now.

If you have somebody experienced to do the move quickly and it’s warm it would be safe enough. Better in my opinion than a leaky damp home for winter. I moved a colony on Thursday in 12 degrees.
If you can put a cosy over the current nuc that would make it drier though.

It's kind of time and lack of experience Erica. ..

I have polystyrene coming some time soon and was going to endeavour some kind of attempt at a jacket....

I lean towards the leave them alone but also very much believe in the kill or cure....this will be the first colonies I have overwintered so anxious to try and do the right thing for the bees...

We live in an incredibly damp climate here....don't want to have to nurse them through....but i will have to transfer 5 frames to an 8 frame polynuc...I have one frame of sugar syrup stores in the freezer only half capped and a homemade kingspan frame(if it holds together)!!!

It is up to you yet again regardless of the wet climate you live in ?, the bees will sort themselves out if they have a rain proof house, if they have not a water tight home make it Rain proof and leave them where they are till spring, if it is poly they will be fine if it is wood they will be fine, however if it is wood make a cosey job done till next year.

Thanks millet...does it matter how bad my diy skills are???:hairpull::hairpull:

The damp won’t bother them too much if you make sure they are isolated from the ground and waterproof from the top

Good good....next plan for tomorrow Sunday is to raise the nuc about 6 inches...in theory then would one piece of polystyrene over the top with an overhang as such be I useful solution if it all goes terribly wrong??...I always like worse case scenario first!

You sound Deadly. :spy:

Not really millet!..just like the bare bum first..anything is a bonus after that and I'm less likely to doom myself to failure...lol...

I wasn't planning bees yet..they just kind of landed on me late in season so I'm kind of racing to catch up!!.:Angel_anim::Angel_anim:

Good luck Im sure will be fine make sure bees can’t get underneath if there is a mesh floor. Just put a plank at the fron till they get used to the new height

Ive got some thymol syrup on redwood...made up by a friend.

Is there anywhere easy and not ex pensive to buy thymol...everything on eBay seems to be from India with postage charges??

Yes, by nature I'm a doubting Thomas. I can't see anything in Admin's sticky that justifies your 'Proven !!!' In my earlier post on this thread I asked if there had been any comparisons between thymol treated hives and control hives.
An example of the need for evidence-based practice: homeopathy. This is treatment with solutions of medicament in water that have been diluted so many times that only H2O is left. For decades this treatment has been prescribable on the NHS and the vast cohort of believers (inc HRH) have been supported by at least three homeopathic hospitals - I think the London one still exists. However controlled trials have shown no benefit - unsurprisingly - and I believe NHS facilities are being withdrawn.

Yes there have .

Countless threads about the subject on this forum, including various research papers.
