Fondant - thymol

Hello,
Back to the original question. I use Ambrosia fondant and I heat it up, about a kilo at a time, in a microwave oven. To this I add 20% of my own pollen and 10% soya flour (not GM), 15cc of Aloe vera juice (again my own) and for every kilo of fondant I add 1cc of a solution of 1:1 thymol and 99% pure alcohol. To the mixture I may also add, according to the season and needs, some cinnamon, lemon juice, carob juice and other additives that I think are useful.
You have to wear gloves when mixing after adding the thymol solution and just make sure you wash very well before you next urinate!
Best regards

Thats nearly a Christmas cake!!!!!

Yes I agree and the patties go on the hive 23/12 - the shortest day has passed and we are heading into spring - time for them to get going and I do believe in good nutrition. Well nourished bees can do wonders. We HAVE to have them rearing drones ASAP and they have to be able to rear good quality cells at the end of February.

Hi Roger
Now me thinks you are just rubbing our noses in it, over in cy, you know damn well how cold it is over here, only common thing is that the shortest day is past. Still you get them working, we are all looking forward to some new stock in a few months time.

Hi norton
Can u explain 1:1 thymol in 99% alcohol? Is that 1ml thymol in 1ml of 99% alcohol ( 1ml water to 99ml ethanol). I'm confused

and John, I'm voting for whacko

Eb,

1:1 thymol and 99% pure alcohol.

I read it as:

1:1-------------Thymol : ethanol (or n-propanol)

Regards, RAB

99% pure alcohol (so not gin then, but maybe surgical spirit) mix one part of this with one part of thymol crystals, by weight (or guess well) .

Obviously Norton wishes to disolve the thymol in the alcohol, with the minumum amount of fluid that he can get away with (could be gin . . . ha ha) as he doesn't want to make the fondant sloppy.

Sorry RAB cross post, I was also doing other things.

Much more elegant Norton. Thanks.

Hello,
If I have 30kgs of fondant I mix 15g of thymol with 15ml of alcohol and put about 1ml of this solution in each kg. It acts against varroa and nosema.
As for the weather - it was only 17C here today - so we have the heating on.
Best regards

Just read this - I can't fathom why you would feed your bees half this stuff - how on earth will they benefit from Aloe Vera, Cinnamon, Lemon Juice, Carob and 'other additives' ?

In my mind's eye I can picture someone standing over a cauldron pouring in pretty much anything that is within arms reach and then feeding it to your bees ?

Utter utter madness

I think a post like this would really confuse any new beekeeper, indeed many beekeepers ! Keep it simple, feed sugar syrup, fondant (home made or from a bee supplier) and with medication as required....steer well clear of any other supplements !

regards
