Now that you have done it and all is well
http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=261292#post261292 which method did you use and did you put your nuc in a brood box first.
Thanks for the intrest Chalkie, this is how I did it,
1. In the afternoon the Nuc frames where placed, in order, in the middle of a Brood Box, a frame of foundation and dummy board were placed at each end, roof and floor placed top and bottom.
2. At dusk, once the bees had stopped flying, I united the colonies using the newspaper method. The Nuc bees (now in the BB) where placed on the top.
3. The entrance was stuffed with grass. Unfortunately due to the heat, 27 degrees, the grass wilted so I blocked the entrance with cardboard.
4. On the third day I unblocked the entrance.
I was concerned that the heat, 3 days of 27 - 28 degrees, would overheat the bees. I pm'd PH, he re assured me and......... he was right, today I saw the Queen, eggs in the hive confirmed that she is laying well.
Please note, I did not move the colonies together before uniting, the colonies were approximately 4m apart. PH informed me that blocking the entrance for 3 days made the bees realise that something was different, this ensured that they re orientated when leaving the hive.
Will definitely use this method in future.
