Hi all,
I'm about 6 months into keeping. Having cleared and removed my supers this week I've put Brother Adams type Feeders onto both hives. As an afterthought I popped a crownboard on top of each then replaced the roofs. These crownboards have 2 porter escape boards in each. Today I noticed a lot of activity around the hives and when I went to take a closer look I found bees (and a couple of wasps) checking out the mesh over the ventilation holes in the sides of the roofs.
Whilst too much ventilation might mean too much evaporation from the syrup I had thought a bit to prevent fermentation hence using crownboards with holes in but I'm now wondering if solid crownboards above the syrup would be better idea to reduce the risks of robbing.
What do people think? and what're people using?

Cheers! I'll go swap em out soon as they stop flying this evening

Or just cover the holes/mesh with a piece of slate or ply.

There should be no access to the hive via the roof anyway.

I always put a crown board above the feeder, with a square of old carpet on the crown board to stop any bees/wasps going through the feed holes. I use Miller or Ashforth feeders. A good colony will empty a feeder in a few days. Don't worry about evaporation.
