I do as Blossom. Without the cider.The blow torch is used mainly for sanitary purposes. BUT, I have however noticed the following points:

When I put old frames and new frames in the same hive, the bees generally prefer to build on the old frames.

If I just scrape off the worst of the wax and then put the frames back, the bees collect the remaining bits of wax and recycle them.

Don't worry about causing arguments, it happens all the time. Our local association has a Burco boiler for us to borrow and use for frame cleaning
