I have used SumUp for about six years and now have two of the variety with a built in SIM. I find these are better than the type using your phone. These work really well and will also tap into available Wi-Fi if desired. Despite my best attempts I have never managed to get them below 50% battery even at busy events.
You can get a running sales tally from the SumUp app on your phone which is useful.

I use Sumup and using my phone now to read cards is brilliant as I don't need to cart the card reader with me. Just have to remember the rear or the phone has the NFC so you can't plonk a card in the front screen and have to read phones back to back.

Yes, I've had a similar experience with the Zettle reader, which has never run flat even after 6 hours, and like all of them, has unlimited data. I do make sure to charge it the night before...

I guess it doesn't have the NFC functionality? As it turns out, despite only being four years old neither does mine. I'm trying to decide on the best way forward now. Tap to pay would be very convenient, but frankly I don't value a mobile phone sufficiently to pay hundreds of pounds for a new one every few years.

Mmm yes it does which is strange. I just get the same message about camera use, which is already enabled. Sum up support can't answer it. It's no biggie, just use the little reader which works great.

Tap to pay is handy, but people seem to trust/expect a reader more.
The square reader is small enough to be convenient to carry - 7cm square by 1cm thick.
