This morning looking into the hive entrance I noticed lots of bees congregating on the mesh floor just a lttle bit back from the entrance itself, like a crowd waiting to go out. Last inspection had no queen cells, but the hive was very low on stores, none in fact, so I have been feeding a 1:1 sugar. The hive has plenty of bees and brood and one super on. Any suggestions as to what my observation means.

WOW

Waiting on weather, or in oilfield terms waiting on water.. or both?

This is a problem that you have to solve before winter. The chances are the bees are missing the entrance and flying underneath. They will try all night to get through your mesh floor, a little like they go through a QE. In the winter they will die of cold and you can lose loads of bees, make sure that the area between the landing board and the ground is blocked off with something. Wood, brick, cloth, anything to stop them flying underneath from the front. It is a common problem with mesh floors and needs sorting out.

I took it to mean that they are inside the hive not under it.

I saw similar during a heavy rain shower on quite warm day. They were just waiting for the rain to stop then they all piled out again.

Bees were in the hive.....just looked amusing seeing hundreds there congregating. Lashed rain all night, they were'nt there this morniong though.
