I have a large laurel hedge and over the last few days have noticed lots of bees in it. They are on the underside of the leaves and walking up the centre spine. Not sure what they are getting, possibly moisture?

Nectar, laurel has "extra-floral nectaries" i.e they have small glands on the leaf stalk that produce nectar. The exact function isn't understood but it may be to attract ants which then defend the plant against other insect pests. I think from memory cherries and some beans also have them.

Hi Frenchie,
Glad you are asking about Cherry Laurel. It has extra floral nectaries on the underside of the leaves near the spine. Little black dots if you look closely. The question I have is that I think mine collect a lot of this and is this why my spring honey has a lingering citrus finish to it?

Thanks for the info, didn't know that.
