Apiguard and dead bees

Put on Apiguard on 5 hives two weeks past, hives full of bees. went back today to give second treatment was met with 3 hives of dead bees. What could have gone wrong

Starved or robbed out perhaps.

Too many bees for the food. This year the hives have been larger when we treated, simply not enough for them all to eat. A classic sign is them dying with their heads in bottom of cells.
