Apiary Security System – perhaps!

Step 1 Buy a pair of size 14-16 work boots

Step 2 Put them at the entrance to your apiary along with a copy of ‘Guns & Ammo’

Step 3 Put some giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazine

Step 4 Leave a note at the gate:

"Gone for more ammo and beer. Back soon.
Don't mess with the pit bulls; they messed the postman up bad this morning.
I don't think Killer took part but hard to tell from all the blood.
Better wait outside. Be right back”
taken from Petersfield and District BKA December newsletter

Or if the above doesn't work deploy lethal force.....

Nothing beats a suitably weighted handbag.:D

Has anyone ideas about the installation of a camera or electronic notification device in an out apiary? This should of course be battery powered, have a motion detector and ideally take photos/video and send a notification to a mobile phone.

Bushnell do one that sends a message to your mobile when activated battery lasts 3 to 6 months

Norton - The Acorn Ltl-6210MM HD Email/MMS Wildlife Trail Camera will do exactly what you want, if you have £250 spare. I have the basic version that doesn't send notifications. It's a great device, which I use in the garden to snap wildlife, for example hedgehogs eating dead bees around the hives. Also triggered by birds though, so you might get lots of false alarms!

I have (what I believe to be) an original idea using older radio-control equipment - of which I've now bought several sets, and now just need to cobble the bits together. But not having an out apiary right now, there's no great pressure to do this - as my more immediate concern is in keeping alive what few bees I have left at home.

But - and this is the point of my post - the last place in the world I would discuss how this system works is on an Internet chat forum to which the whole world and his dog have access - for if I were a bee thief, then I'd be scanning forums such as this one for ideas and tips.

So - suggestion - if you're going to put together something halfway clever in the security line - discuss it amongst the 'inner sanctum' off-forum, and keep the details (especially the locations of out apiaries) 100% private.

Another thing to be care full of is posting pictures of your hives with easily recognisable landmarks in them.

Roger Delon used to keep his alpine-based hives in arrays of 4 or more, with each set of hives having concrete blocks below. A steel frame was placed over the top of the array, which was then chained to the blocks below - thus creating an immoveable 'block' of 4 hives or more.

Nasty bees seem like a good idea.. which means AMM keepers are already protected...:serenade:
