I doubt it. Just more :conehead: stuff

. Perhaps Beefriendly would like to temporarily donate one of his Abelo hives to derekm for research purposes.

No I wouldn't. If he wants an Abelo hive he can buy his own...
Derek does weird complex hyper-dimensional theoretical totally non understandable equations ....he is yet to to embark on research....
Or explain what he means in words an average beekeeper can understand.

I didn't know what a skep was so just had a quick read about them on Google. They look nice but are they difficult to inspect and harvest?

What are the primary reasons a beekeeper would choose a skep?

Not for keeping bees in now days although theres the odd 1 set up, many like them for collecting swarms and other odd jobs

Hi Ian,

Thank you for clearing that up. Are they good for swarms? By that I mean are the bees more attracted to the construction material than alternative swarm traps? I've seen the seemingly inexpensive swarm traps that don't particularly look nice but appear effective.

By collecting i mean as a container to knock them into. They are light and flexible enough to squeeze into corners or between branches. So not as a trap!!!

Ohh right I get you! Thanks for clearing that up further haha :laughing-smiley-004

The skep I have purchased is for swarm collection as they seem to absorb the smell of queen substance and so are very attractive for swarms to go into and settle quickly.

I have no intention of using one as a hive especially as I am keen on another hive type, hence the nick.

As regards explaining IT to bee keepers:
I've demonstrated some of the content of the latest paper at dozens of beekeeping lectures since 2013/ 2014 using water containers and bags of sugar as the fun part of the lecture (yes the lecture came first then the detailed maths). Pretty pictures of water containers don't hack it as regards peer reviewed papers, so I'm getting the pretty pictures version published in a bee magazine.

The maths in my papers is o level algebra, the physics is somewhere between o and A level. Surely something someone with HND Applied Biology, BSc, MSc (distinction), PhD (cell biology and cytology) can wrap their heads round unless they flunked maths completely, became maths phobic and think research is only done with microscopes. Perhaps something in common with a troll on the BKA forum.
perhaps this is applicable

A critical observation... but quite correct!

Many PhD students it seems, after 3 ( short years) research and collecting results do not have a clue on how to represent them statistically and in an understandable format.... now I see the problems with some peoples understanding of the fact that native bees are extant in some regions of the UK.... despite indisputable DNA data.... not enough pretty graphs ( and WE like pretty graphs!!!)

Well done derekm!

Mostly historic. You can learn more about the use of skeps here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQqcrOCQXag&list=PLbr7jvL12x97ULCZHkoklEnri3JmEkkiE )

Inspection of the comb is difficult and they aren't used much now.

That's interesting, if I get a chance I'll have a look after work. Thanks :)

Have you used skeps for a while now? I haven't been on these forums long but I'm learning a fair bit!

Used skeps for what? Keeping colonies in no. Used for swarm collection yes for 31 years.

Algebra is for more than a few including me Derek a totally closed book. Numbers I feel competent with but as soon as letters appear I am lost. So I thought ok this is due possibly to poor teaching so I'll take an Open Uni course. I packed it in after two months as it was a closed door there too. I am one of the many who are just incapable of understanding maths. *shrug*

Has it impacted on my life so far? Not that I know of apart from missing out on maths led careers. Now I'm retired it makes no odds at all. :)

Surely its helpful for working out tax liability on private pensions/state pensions to ensure you aren't paying excessive tax?

that oh so nearly happened to me my first maths teacher in secondary education was crap .Algebra was gobblegook to learned by rote the way he taught it . And to get past that I got some help from my big sister, who was training to be a maths teacher.
My love of physics started when made to do an experiment in lunch time detention.

Never seen algebra used for tax. Maybe our accountant does, will ask her at some point.
