I've got ants climbing up the side of one hive. Several hundred of them. Is this a problem? What is a safe way of getting rid of the ants without harming the bees? Can I use ant powder?

Do not use ant powder.

cinnamon around the legs is supposed to work.

But you probably have ants under the slab your hive is on.

Water the ground underneath and the ants will move away. Not boiling, just cold.

I used cinnamon 2 weeks ago, sprinkling it around the legs of the hive stand for 3 consecutive days in a row, and they've not returned.... Yet... bee-smillie

Pffff - ants! Formic acid is supposed to be an effective varroicide. I did take mild offence one time though when I found they had started carting their eggs up into the feeder. (The ants, that is.) However the ants' eggs were gratefully received by the hens who like to spend much of the day by or under the hives.

Good dollops of grease around the hive stand legs, all the way around. Just remember that you have greasy legs when you move or maintain the stand.

Ah yes that well known bass guitarist!

Great. Just remember it's there as it will last for years. You may have to refresh it occasionally as it will collect dust and dirt and will be less effective. I do like a cheap solution.
