I thought I had heard it all about council incompetence and blunders but I came across an article from June (so sorry if it is not new news to some) where Anglesey Council pest controllers exterminated Welsh Black Bees thinking they were wasps. How can such incompetence and ignorance still be the norm in public sector organisations is beyond me and how are these people in charge of pesticides is even more worrying.

I wouldnt bother - a lot of hype and even more misinformation from some five minute expert cobbled up with the usual press hyperbole. thought this had died a death long time ago.

Think you'll find it's much easier to say,
"they're wasps . . . .that'' be £150 please", than identify the insect in question.

Also (if we are talking local authority housing), the tenants are likely to expect an immediate & FREE service as part of their "Human Rights"!

A somewhat unpleasant, arrogant and bigoted statement, doubtless fuelled by what you read in your Daily Mail.

Unpleasant arrogant and bigoted it may be, but it was also realistic.

the 'almost extinct rare Welsh black bees' were in a bin on the high street if I recall - the whole massive swarm of 1,500 bees (that's according to some 'expert' they dug up) were killed.
Big deal?
No
Stupid mistake?
Yes
But at least it made the daily fail!!

And a way of getting popcorn automatically delivered the moment you read certain threads

:cheers2:

I think far more one day wonder beekeepers kill bees than pest control officers. Here at least pest control officers are well educated on all things related to bees and wasps

The honest ones end up paying for their own petrol whilst the dishonest pocket £150+ (probably Tax Free)!

Here's the original press report https://tinyurl.com/yadhnv89
Some smart beekeepers will say it's a lot of inaccurate hype, but the target readership was the man or woman on the street. They got the message loud and clear that everybody needs to care for the bees.

as I said - a load of totally inaccurate rubbish backed up by a five mi nute expert.
Are 'Welsh black bees' on the verge of extinction?
Are they the last survivors of the original British bee?

No, a load of twaddle churned out by a rag with form for printing this sort of rubbish in the past.

Maybe it was a daft thing to do, but he's already raised £950 for dementia awareness, and after this publicity will doubtless raise a lot more. So good for him.

And cost the NHS thousands in treatment..

Doubtful. The treatment of hypothermia doesn't cost a lot in drugs and equipment. Okay, you can point to the wages of the ambulance crew who attended him but they would have got paid whether they had someone to treat or nothing to do but drink coffee and read a paper while waiting for a call. The blanket he was wrapped in is reusable. He wasn't admitted to hospital. He cost the NHS little more than the price of fuel, and a hot drink.
