You were lucky it didn't result in a dead colony, or at least a queenless one!
If I were using standard Nationals I would always try to have a super of stores, over the brood, going into winter. What I might do with it in the spring is my choice and would depend on the prevailing circumstance. Better than having to feed fondant, IMO.
