Cold snap ended here today.
I went to the hive, didnt hear anything. I opened and the dreaded : all death.
There was stick of fondant, half eaten, but all comb empty.

Went into winter with insufficient food apparently. And I didnt take any honey last year !

You cant believe how sad this makes me.

Only ever lost one to starvation, will never do that again!!! Feel for you

Sad it's your only one Quevy. 😕😕
I have one hive that is very light and I'm having to feed plenty of fondant. It went into winter light and it's probably my biggest colony!
Fingers crossed I can get them through until there is a nectar flow.

No bees head first in the cells?

Leave 20 cm of honey (syrup) in every frame and everything will be ok. Fondant is an emergency exit. That colony might be weak, small or ill so it was not able to eat fondant especially while there was cold weather.
I've already lost 3 colonies. They had the signs of chalkbrood and sacbrood in summer. Nature decided to erase them so made this job instead of me.

Very true. I'll probably lose a couple of weak colonies this year. Never a good sign when a colony is light but hardly touches the fondant

Most bees where on bottom. That was covered in a layer of bees
Small cluster was on comb in corner.
Few bees head first in cells
Nearly all honey eaten.

I bought the nuc in August and that was too late in the season. Didnt take honey. Its Warre hive and all frames were loaded with honey.
I nadired on receipt but bees didnt build come in that part of the hive.

Fed them before winter.

Put fondant on top of the bars.

Unfortunately, with the extreme cold (Belgium cold not Siberian) bees could move to the fondant, no more honey in the combs so they starved to death.

Cant blame the cold, its myself. Went into winter with a too small hive and the location of the hive was not good. Should have put it more south oriented so it could have benefited from the few days sunshine.

Need to find a nuc but before the honeyflow and stronger than the 5 frames I bought.
