i have read a lot of comments on here about people doing this. i have never heard of it at my local BKA and was just wondering if someone could explain the process and benefits please.

Process?
I'll try an analogy, one which may not 'wash' with some in matters of
personal hygiene, yet may convey how much and how often.
Conjure up the dilemmna whereon Cinderella fell suddenly ill on the
afternoon of _that Ball_ sooo you her sister were pressed to replace
her by fair wind or foul. Being 16th century SouEast England - and way
too early to have the hearth warmed for bath water - you hitch up the
hems and liberally apply a couple of pumps of Eau de Cologne, the
reward of a night of 'company' on the beach among brigand smugglers.
'FRESHENED' off to the Ball you canter, sweeping all you pass to their
doors - noses all awash as those so afflicted/assualted seek the snuff box
indoors.

Benefits?
Perhaps if you could expand on context..?.. like are you asking for
Man or for Bee (Apis)?

Spray top of frames of box on bottom - approx no more than 4-5 second burst.
Spray bottom of box on top as above.
Unite.

Bees buzz like mad when sprayed: all sense of smell disrupted. By the time they recover it, they are merged..

Walk away. Leave 24 hours Job done.

Never seen any dead bees as a result.

Advantages: time, effort..Works Minimal hassle for bees.
Disadvantages: need to tilt upper box to spray underside of frames.

As madasafish
It helps if boxes are next to each other?
Never done it though
I have time and the hives are near the house so I mess around with newspaper.

I've always been a little suspicious of these "short cuts" but haven't tried it myself.
Don't they use Propane as a propellant, could be a bit exciting on a still day (if your smoker is going well close by)??

Obviously jet another Geographic conundrum! :bump:

No doubt you'll be an expert on it all by post 7. :smilielol5::smilielol5::smilielol5:

:

If your smoker is belching sparks then conceivably..But remember as a gas expands it loses latent heat so is cold.. so the chances are you would need a naked flame to set it alight..

My smoker generally blows cool smoke (as seen by the tar deposits in the nozzle) : if the smoke is hot enough to ignite propane, it's going to kill bees.

( I recall a James Bond film where he ignited an aerosol with a lighter to kill a snake..)

Mine uses nitrogen. Which is about 80% of air anyway.

I use it frequently. I use glade vanilla.
A quick squirt under the top box and over the bottom box will do.
If you are adding a couple of frames to a hive then make a space for them, quick squirt in the gap. Quick squirt around the frame before dropping it in the gap.
Five seconds seems excessive to me. Never keep my finger on the trigger for more than a second!
It does work.
Not had a failure yet
It is quick and easy with no faffing with newspaper and also prevents overheating on a hot summer day which can happen if newspaper unite hasn't been eaten through. No nasty print derivatives being dragged through hive.
Loads of benefits and I can't see any cons yet!

I avoid overheating by lifting the crownboard a few mm at each corner
Uniting late evening bees are through the newspaper by morning anyway

"Most use compressed air."

That generalsed "unite with air freshener" leads into sufficient ambuguity
around compounds used *and* propellent type as to be certain your
average Joe is not going to be reading any label - the "she'll be right, just
do it" will prevail among those so inclined to buy into the snake-oil game.

The 'debate' in another thread covered all of this, propellant included... and
then as now "nobody knows" applies.
The topic is as ridiculous as it is dead - to beekeepers. Worth little more
than passing comical largesse.

Anyone who has locked bees down knows how quick they are to
rectify ventilation, given the access to do so.
Using suffocation as excuse not to use newsprint is simply
dragging the topic into further alleys of the ridiculous.

One of the few example where matchsticks can be of use........

As an aside ...noting the two posts above Anduril's...does anyone bother reading that random gibberish from Oz?

Yes, I particularly liked the Cinderella reboot :spy:

P.s. smoke and/or lemongrass oil & water for me.

I tend to use matches more in the winter. ;)

Looks like I was 5-6 post out in my prediction, I thought Australia was 12 hours away, (or do bars in Earl's Court count)? :cheers2:

I have given up with Oz. If he doesn't do it it's wrong. If you do something different it's wrong. If he doesn't like it it's wrong. I like someone with an open mind. I have learnt and changed over the years. He will never do that although he will now say that statement is wrong too! I just ignore him
