Bees will make whatever size cells they're intent on, even ripping down existing comb if they want to change it, it's quite common for them to make the top cells worker size and the lower quadrants drone size, so I can't see that any format of starter strip is going to make a blind bit of difference after the first few rows have been built.

Yes, thinking it through I'm back to my initial thoughts that the starter strip should make no difference. Where I can see the "foundationless is not small cell" argument is that the bees will initially be of a larger size and will therefore build larger cells. In order to get to smaller cells (leaving aside the debate as to whether it has any merits) you'll need to force a size reduction in them.

It is just idle speculation of a beginner though, this season I'll start taking a ruler to them!
