Thank you madasafish, very grateful for your reply.

Just recently, (few days ago), bought this from Thornes, then saw this thread. Quite like the look of this one though!
I have one of these punches and bought it direct when I saw it demonstrated by the association of the chap who makes them. V easy to use. Here’s some pics . Best tip is to select larva from older brown frames as new comb cells are too fragile to handle and easily squash

Roger Patterson is due to publish a book on cell punching i did some pictures with him a while back not sure if he will use. yes old comb, new comb tends to collapse i find especially on hot days. He also ran a training course at our division some pics below. Also attached images of the punches in use.

Thank you polymath for all that info.

I have seen your detailed instructions using bullet casings, very impressive too with the level of detail, tools used and suppliers etc.

I have managed to get Roger Patterson's book and you are indeed, mentioned in the book discussing the use of casings along with a photo.

The chap in question, regarding the punch which started this thread, mentions in the comments on youtube that he may produce a video on the making of it. I was hoping to make contact to discuss his future plans, if there are any.

Got a spare 303 rifle by any chance so I can get some squirrels. Air rifle ain't any use. :D

Thanks again papa_sierra.

Got a few questions, if you don't mind answering, please?
  1. For the SS what dimensions did you use, was it 9.5mm OD and 8mm ID?
  2. Do you have a website/supplier where they might sell shorter lengths of SS?
  3. Do you have a website/supplier for the poly tubing?
Cheers

SS tube is 10mm od and 8mm id
Poly tube is 10mm id (food grade stuff - homebrew supplies)
Wooden dowel 8mm (needed sanding a bit)
Nicked a bit of broom handle for the tops.
Terry clips (9mm)

All via Ebay. My ebay purchase history doesn't go back far enough, so cannot quote my supply but easy enough to find.

Anything else, please ask.

I made a punch out of 10mm brass tube last year ( clockmaking-brass.co.uk ) and bored out some plastic holders to put the cells in. Also tried moulding the bases to jzbz cups. I have to say that my grafts met with better success! However I am going to try again this year and heat the punch before use because old comb is tough, but the cells do hold their shape better. New comb tends to collapse. I am keen to make a success of it as a hand tremor is not good news when trying to graft!
