Just had news of 6 hives with bees taken from Cardiff. They are home made hives so should be easily recognised

Any hope of photo's as homemade hives aren't rare - and so we know what to look out for?

All the info I have at the moment
It has happened again, John from Ely has had 6 hives complete with bees stolen. These were home made hives and were constructed from timber decking so if anyone sees these or are offered them please contact me or Cardiff, Vale & Valleys Beekeepers Association and I'll pass the information.

so is that 6 or 12 hives nicked, Craig?

Did these hives turn up at all.

The worst thing about hives going missing to me is that the thief must be a beekeeper since your average scrote wouldn't begin to know how to close and move a hive, even if they did Google beforehand :nono:

perhaps there is a gang of itinerant Finns travelling the country looking for anyone with MORE THAN ONE hive - stealing the excess from those they identify in order to maintain the Status Quo in the mind of our distant friend.

Well ... at least I'm safe from them then ... Mind you, they would need four strong blokes or a fork lift truck to move mine !

not taken the supers off yet then???????

Sadly this is quite common in the Cardiff area. It happens all the time and is clearly a beekeeper doing it.

When she kept bees my daughter did not want to join a local branch because she did want anyone to know the location of her hives, but instead arranged a mentor.

Not sure I follow your logic here, as Treasurer and temp membership sec for our BKA I'm the only one with full access to postal address details etc of all our members, this does not tell me where there apiary's are. The possible exceptions are if a beekeeper tells someone their apiary locations or the SBI if reg'd with beebase?

Apologies if my reply was not very clear but I didn't want to go into specifics.

I don't question the ability of membership secs/treasurers etc to keep information confidential. However once you join and (presumably!) attend meetings then you start to get known and someone somewhere may hear something and information gets out. Not saying I agree with the logic although I understand it, just saying what has happened in one case.
