Have got my built, but as yet unoccupied, hive in position ready for the day I finaly get some bees, it's killing me, I may have to spend some money soon lol, anyone got any in Bristol/Bath/S glos area ??

Anyway, was just showing it to in-laws this lunchtime. So took off the roof and 10 seconds later a lone bee flew out of the foundation, only one but who knows, a scout perhaps. Low odds I know but, hey, you can live in hope ;) But then disturbing it probably hasn't increased odds !!

So dabbed some lemongrass oil on sides and we'll see, and if it does , and if not, nothing lost.

btw, here's the hive

Nice pictures, good luck with attracting some bees. If this is a th-nes floor or another that has drawing pins holding the mesh at the back as well as the front (which we can see) can I recommend that before you get your bees you staple the mesh to the underside crossbar at the back, if the pins come out and the mesh sags, it offers ingress to wasps and unexpected exit space for bees when moving hives. Same advice for the mesh pieces in the roof vents.
Two people on my allotment had trouble with this last year, one had other wasp entry issues as well as the mesh slipping and ended up with very grumpy bees.

:iagree:

And they rust. There's budget and there's saving half a penny by not using galvanised roofing nails or fencing staples. I had a box of short screws so that's what was used. Otherwise it's not long before either the inspection sheet won't fit or you have bees coming out at unexpected angles.

cheers for advice on mesh, i must admit the drawing pin approach has bothered me, just doesn't look right.

I did get the staple gun out for the roof vents, will probably do same for floor

You could sit there on a summer afternoon with a glass of wine and a pair of binoculars :)

i am looking fwd to stting out watching when i get some, maybe a proper chair though

Staples from a staple gun will rust. Use the galvanized wire staples sold (mostly) for fencing wire or galvanized roofing nails.

This is where someone tells me they're lesser spotted hungarian robber bees

Nah, That's the Often Spotted. :)

Have you tried linking in to your local swarm collector? I've had four so far and am almost at the point when I start using a list of waiting beekeepers.

Jackbee, I would get rid of the drawing pins and staple the mesh in place, as its quite easily dislodged and they they always use the back door which can be awkward.
