    Bee nest

A bee colony has moved into a wall cavity of my house with only a 3 inch by 1 inch access. Does anybody have any advise as to how I can retrieve the bees? Is leaving them there an option? I have a spare hive so getting them would be good. Thanks. Roy

    Changing to 14x12

Dear Beekeepers, i recently replaced the BB in my WBC with a larger 14x12 BB to give the bees more room and delay or decrease the probability of swarming. I have placed the existing frames which are full and healthy in the 14x12 and was able to include 2 14x12 undrawn frames at either end...

    Dead bees/larvae outside new hive

10 days ago I acquired a new colony. I have a larger existing colony 15 ft away. I performed the 1st full hive inspection yesterday. Last week I noticed a few dead bees and larvae outside of hive. Inspection went well; all looked fine. After tidy up yesterday, this morning I noticed new dead...

    Langstroth: harmony frame rotation method

I have been doing a bit of reading and came across this beekeeping method. Is anyone familiar with it and/or have a view. Both sides of the argument (less interference and natural swarming versus a lot of intervention and no swarming) makes for interesting reading. Would be good to hear some...

    2 hives wanted

I currently have 2 WBC hives; 1 active and 1 empty. I have the 2nd as I had a swarm last year and got the 2nd to house it but it didn't survive over the winter. Ideally, I would like 2 healthy active hives but am aware that my 1st hive is likely to swarm again. Do I keep the 2nd hive free in...

    Good News!

Just arrived back from 2 week holiday expecting the worst given the 2nd cold spell we had and the number of posts from beeks who have lost colonies over the long winter. 1st brief inspection today showed they were alive and well! So happy given this was my 1st winter and the feeling I had that I...

    Replacing queen excluder

This is my first spring, 2nd season, and have been reading a lot over the winter. Later in the spring, rather than putting QE back in between brood and shallow super, is there merit in placing it above the super (in a brood box /shallow super setup) and placing a new shallow super (or 2?) on...

    Looking forward .....

This is my 1st year bee keeping. I have 1 strong colony made up of 1 deep brood and 2 supers (1 ready for harvest). Looking forward, should I be working towards having 2 deep broods which are left for the bees and not harvested? If so, Should there be a queen excluder between the 2. A New Bee

    Adding supers and crown boards

I have 1 brood box with 1 super above seperated by queen excluder. I am anticipating harvesting my super soon and notice that the hive is very full (of bees). Would you suggest adding another super now between the existing super and brood box to add room and draw down the bees from the full...
