School Children Visits to an Apiary

I have been asked to host visits by schoolchildren to the apiary I manage. The hives belong to a Country Park Volunteers group and are sited on a council-owned country park (in a secure area away from public interference). Insurance-wise I am covered by my membership of my local beekeeping...

    Drone Brood

I completed my first inspections on 3 hives today. All had drone brood but one in particular had a lot. No adult drones visible yet. My first thought was that it is a bit early for a lot of drone brood, second thought, I wonder if the colony are preparing for an early swarm? The colony had a lot...

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jun/25/hornets-race-to-protect-north-americas-honeybees-from-giant-invader-aoe This article in the Guardian makes interesting reading. Let's hope we never see these arrive in the UK

Nosema ceranae - the root of all our troubles

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/11633567/Tiny-parasite-could-be-behind-massive-worldwide-decline-of-bees.html Interesting article in the Telegraph. We can all blame nosema ceranae for our problems now.

MB Queen Trap Anti Swarm Device

Good people, I am trying to find anyone with experiences of the MB anti swarm device http://www.----------------.co.uk/products/langstroth-hives/queen-trap-swarm-prevention I have been using the MB hives for a few years and like them - I know they are not everyone's cup of tea but that is not...

Swarm of Killer Hornets make a Beeline for Britain

Not My title but the Telegraph's. Good to highlight the problem (although I understood the Asian Hornet to be a little smaller than our own Hornet) but typically journalistic in it's sensationalism...

    Telegraph CCD Article

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/conservation/11400807/Bee-colonies-collapse-as-stressed-young-workers-grow-up-too-fast.html Interesting article, but still mentions CCD in Britain. I understood that we had not had any cases here?

    Making Syrup

For the first time I made my own 1:1 syrup, in good time I thought, using the DEFRA recipe. No problems dissolving the sugar and then I made up the thymol to add. Nowhere does it mention that thymol is all-pervading and that it should me made up outside using gloves unless you want your sinuses...

    Tricky Question

I am using the winter to bone-up on questions for my Basic next year, but one has me stumped. 'If your bees have suffered starvation what should you do to frames afterwards?' Can anyone help please?

    Apiguard and Uniting colonies

Forgive a newbee-type question but can I successfully unite in the middle of Apiguard treatment or will the Apiguard overpower the queen pheromones? The year is getting on and we have been trying to 'save' the weaker colony but it is time to bit the bullet and unite.

    Chalkbrood

We requeened a Q- hive 3 weeks ago and she settled and laid well. Today on inspection before applying Apiguard, we noticed quite a lot of chalkbrood. The hive seems well enough ventilated and we are reluctant to requeen again at this stage of the year. Any other advice?

    Varroa Treatments

I am thinking of treating my hives for varroa shortly but as an inexperinced beek I am looking for advice please. At my Association we always use Apiguard but has anyone got any opinions on ApiLifeVar or other products?:

    Concerned about build up

We have had our hive for about a month (after a year learning and helping at our Association apiary), a five frame nuc which we transferred immediately into a hive. After 4 weeks virtually nothing has happened. We have 3 frames of brood and a couple of supplies - uncapped nectar and pollen so...
