    Honey storage

Does it make any difference if bottled honey is kept in a dark cupboard or stored on open shelves? Does light affect colour, taste etc?? And, as an aside, why do we bottle honey into jars and not jar it?

    Uncapped honey - drop test

How reliable is the shake test to check that honey is Ok for extracting. I have some frames in supers which aren't wholly capped - probably less than 50% capped but I want to extract this weekend so I can do varroa treatment through september. They have been filled for weeks just not getting...

Wellies seem to be the general norm to wear around the apiary but I have seen a cpl of people in gaiters. What are people's preferences - dpes anyone here wear gaiters or even nothing (just shoes!) I just don't like wellies so was thinking of trying gaiters. I did go in shoes for a couple...

What is your 'buzz' about keeping bees?

What is your 'buzz' about keeping bees? I'm feeling good about the world this week so to continue the positive vibes I thought I'd try and drag this forum with me in a feelgood thread. What is that drives you to keep bees? the honey? the wax? the biology of the bees - social?, physiological...

    drone brood as varroa estimation

Was talking to an SBI about using drone brood to check varroa levels. She was saying timing is important, and the pink eye stage (day 20 ish) is the right time to check. So, is it possible to determine the 20 day stage; she reckoned it was possible from state of capping if you knew your stuff...

    Packing polystyrene as dividers

Ok, this may be a daft idea but until I ask I won't know so . . . Have a swarm in a 14x12, but small, only on 2/3 frames even after a month. So I'm thinking it's probably a bit spacy in there with 11 frames and a dummy so thought of knocking up some dividers to give them a 6 frame space...

    Pulsating abdomen

Was sat watching the hives, been doing it a lot this weekend, fascinating! Noticed that when some bees settled on hive or landing board or even grass around hive they spent quite some time fairly still apart from their abdomens. They weren't waggling side-side but seemed to be pulsating back to...

    First solo inspection

Did my first solo inspection today bees were fairly calm, but a bit 'bumpy' against fingers on frames but not on suit or veil so quite pleased with temperament. No stings and no followers. Q was on frame about 2 from end, couldn't see eggs (i'm rubbish at spotting eggs - keep forgetting...
