Varroa Treatment for Queen Rearing Nucs?

Last season I used the Demarre Method to rear my first queens. 10 Nucs successfully came through the winter, however they all have a heavier Varroa load than I would like. I treated the Nucs with VarroaMed once the queen had started laying, once a week for 3 weeks, then each Nuc had another...

    Moving Colonies

Hi All, I am hoping to move 3 strong nucs (on 6 frames with space above) to a new apiary site. I have two existing sites with candidates for the move, one more than three miles away from the new site, the other, my back garden is only about 1 mile away (maybe less). It would be so much easier to...

    Beeswax fabric wraps

Has anyone made beeswax fabric wraps to sell at a farmers market? I know I may get shot down here - do you have to prove your wax is food safe, given that we use chemicals in our fight against Varroa and wax moth, and these wraps are used around food (not meat)? Please share your experience...

    Varroa treatment Queen Rearing Nucs

I have 5 poly Nucs, the result of this year's queen rearing. They are on between 3 and 5 frames of brood. Any advice for the best varroa treatment for these small colonies - yes they do need treating. Thanks

    Candles for the Show Bench

It is my local branches Honey Show this week. One of the classes is for "2 wax candles not made in a mould". Any judges out there that can help me with the requirements for beeswax candles for the show bench? Many Thanks

Don't be misled - free delivery

You may have received emails from Bee Equipment telling you that orders over £100 are free. Not so if you buy MAQS - the value of this purchase does not count!!

Wasp nest 1.2m from Hive Entrance

As the title suggests, I have a busy wasp nest, 1.2 metres from a hive entrance. The nest is in the ground. Currently the wasps are not bothering the bees, however I am sure the wasps will become more troublesome when they all vacate the nest - which will be soon. Any ideas how I can destroy...

    8oz hexag jar prices?

Anyone found a good, cheap, supplier of 8oz hexagon jars? The cheapest price I can find is 34p each - hoping for something cheaper. I'm sure they were 24p at the Tradex.

    Blown Away

Hi All, Does anyone here on the forum use a blower to remove bees from supers? If so, what are your experiences? What equipment do you use and where do you source it? Many thanks for your constructive input.

What Mating Nuc do you use and why?

I am going to try Queen Rearing this year. There is so much conflicting advice out there. Some say that virgin queens are mated more quickly from Mini Mating Nucs than from Nucs with standard frame sizes, others say the opposite. Before spending anymore money on equipment (I have noted the...

Granulated Stores - What to do?

Several of my colonies came through the winter with excess stores. The bees are surrounded by Ivy so most of the excess is granulated. I can melt them down in my steam wax extractor but this seems a terrible waste. Is there a simple way to give it back to the bees this autumn?

    Reproductive Organs!

I am taking Module 7 at the end of this month (9 days time!) and have been advised to swat up on the reproductive organs of the queen and drone. Apparently the diagrams from Snodgrass are the best ones to look at, has anyone access to these diagrams? If so can you post them on here please...

    Foundationless frames

Last year there was a great thread about using foundationless frames. I have decided to give it a try with some of my colonies this year, so need to plan ahead. A question for those of you running this configuration - all things being equal (I know strength of colony is important etc), can you...

    Replacement Hoods

So impressed with the package I received in the post this morning. For the last couple of years I have noticed the hoods on my suits have been really poor quality, flimsey netting rather than mesh. They don't seem to last more than 1 season. I was just about to splash out on a BB or She**if...

    P*ynes Feeder (National not Nuc)

I know there have been posts on this subject in the past, I have carried out a search but can't find the appropriate threads. I shall be feeding this week using the new P*ynes feeder (bought last year but not used), I know there have been issues with drowning bees. What adaptations have people...

    Warming Cabinet Thermostat

Hi, can anyone out there help me. I (well my husband mostly!) am making a honey warming cabinet. Following a suggestion from another beekeeper, I bought a Danfoss ATC thermostat that my husband fitted. The thermostat is connected to a light bulb as the heat source. It works in that it...
