Help - shifting bees from a bird box

Wait until it is getting dark and all the bees are inside. Than tape over the entrance and move the box to somewhere secluded. Remove the tape and they will be quite happy. Have done this a few times for neighbours. Unfortunately I have a tree bumble colony in last year's compost heap and they...

    Bee poop on neighbours cars.

You are either a good neighbour or a bad neighbour. Your decision will determine your next step. If you want to live in a shitty neighbourhood then be a shitty neighbour. If you want a peaceful life living in an area where people are nice to each other then be nice to your neighbour. The offer...

    Asian hornet nest Jersey

Precisely. A bit too yellow and no orange.

    Modified Snelgrove II

Did two 'Wallys' this year. The first was a vertical one on a large colony. The problem arose when I started the second manipulation and put the top box to one side to find the queen. I found her alright but when I went to remove the EQCs in the bottom box the bees were very feisty. Added to...

    Varroa Treatment - Super Dilemma

Oh, no another MAQS expert! Follow the instructions with MAQS. Do you only take half your medicine when you're ill? We'll be getting the homeopathic dose next.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Recently I have treated my three Q+ hives with MAQS. Followed the instructions and for the second year all the queens have survived and are laying again. Took off supers as any flow I had is over. They were very light and I suspected the bees were eating the honey. Now, following the nbu...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That's good news Duckduck. But where is 'here'?

    Plant ID,

Looks like a species of Sorbus (Mountain Ash). Lots of varieties available with red, white, pink, orange and yellow berries (not all on the same tree of course).

Only two? Possibly supercedure attempt rather than a swarm attempt. Boy, will those poor bees be confused.

    Swarming. & 14x12s

I'm on 14x12s and will be following Wally Shaw's advice on preemptive swarm control using Snelgrove boards this year.

Varroa Calculator - Treatment is recommended as soon as practically possible

Don't delay. Now's the chance to zap 90+% of the little swines.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Trickled hives and nucs with oxalic two days ago. Massive drop of varroa (100s) in each hive. Very pleased that such a cheap treatment has killed so many of the little swines and given the bees a healthier start to the new year.

Hi Afermo, the pic is a little small but could it be an owl, possibly a short-eared one?

    changing to 14 x 12

Where on earth did you get the idea of using broodbox comb for cut comb honey? If that's your only reason for wanting to go wireless on 14x12 forget it. A healthy colony on 14x12 will provide plenty of unwired supers full of honey suitable for cut comb. Any honey in the broodbox is for the bees...

    My first year

I agree with Tom Bick completely. My second year was one of swarming which I was too inexperienced to control properly. Last year was my third as a beekeeper. I controlled the swarming but lost too many queens through poor handling and I wasn't skilled enough to raise my own. I had to buy them...

Sugar 59p per Kilo at Aldi

My colonies are larger than usual after the excellent summer we've had. They're using up the stores they had in the brood box very quickly so feeding 2:1 is a must if I'm going to get them through the winter. (and that's after giving them the extracted frames and those with rape in to clear...

Has anyone else had this happen?

Thorn, this is seriously disrespectful and your neighbour should be told so. If the honey is correctly labelled it will have your name and address on . It is being sold by a third party without your knowledge or approval. Any problems with it will come back to your door. I would be concerned...

Anyone know name of this shrub, great forage now.
