    Beware Wasps And New Colonies

Problem identified Ok went round and looked at the roof of this particular hive, the underside battons which seal the roof against the crown board should be a continual strip on each side interlocking with each other, this particular roof had a gap the guy who owns the hive had cut two battons...

    Beware Wasps And New Colonies

Checked with one of the bee keepers last night and they found loads of wasps in the ashworth feeder. So asked how hive was assembled, open floor with entrance narrowed, BB, ashworth feeder, crown board, then roof. Bee escapes were in the crown board which allowed access to feeder but not sure...

    Beware Wasps And New Colonies

Gaps in the under roof battons and bee escapes left in the crown board I believe.

    Beware Wasps And New Colonies

Just a short note, this may seem obvious but I know a couple of people that have been caught out. Remember to remove and then block any bee escape holes, particularly if feeding sugar solution, the wasps will crawl under the roof and enter the hive through any escapes left in place.

    Beware Wasps And New Colonies

Hi again, I perhaps haven't described it very well, have a look the entrance is 5mm in height and can be narrowed down to zero. Yes it's more expensive than wood but it will last and some people have no woodworking skills. Your advice is spot on regarding robbing, wasps are everywhere at the...

    Beware Wasps And New Colonies

I now like the RoBo block made of aluminium from T's it has the flexibility to narrow the long open slot, or the side with the bee size holes that are offset to confuse any robbers. I only wish I'd fitted it to my weak colony before my strong hive found their stores!

    Third Laying Worker Colony

You may be right, I guess I'll never know. Although the hive was ok for days after queen introduction, she was laying ok. It may be that the original colony didn't accept her afer all, it may be because they were extremely weak the robbing bees killed her. I'd like to think that it was a...

    Third Laying Worker Colony

Hi again, great result, never say never. If you remember I had a Q- small swarm nuc and they were laying drones, everyone I asked at my association apiary said they were a lost cause and several people on here. However I'm the stubborn type plus a soft touch for any form of wildlife. So I sent...

if no flow on...and no real pollen coming in

It could be that the new workers are orientating on their first flight, or as mentioned it could be robbing. You need to check and if the latter take steps to stop it. I lost a small colony to robbing this week, checked yesterday and very few bees, queen killed and light frames with ragged cells...

    Manic Robbing!!

Inspected both hives, small weak one, no queen and probably declined due to the robbing. Larger hive now drawn two more BB frames and queen laying well. So it looks like into winter with just the one hive but lessons continue to be learnt.

Small Cells and Worker vs. Drone cell

Why? This just looks like complication for complications sake.

    Bees on the run

You need to move the hive back to its original position. the bees have already orientated to the original hive position and now you've confused them by moving their home, they'll think it's disappeared! Don't do anything with the hive or comb leave everything as is and all the bees should return...

    Manic Robbing!!

ok two hives together in my very small apiary, large colony obtained as a nucleus some weeks ago and hived with a miller feeder and some inverted commercial bee food given to me by the seller. second hive weak swarm capture new mated queen just introduced, placed a 4 pint rapid feeder on the...
