    Buying a queen

I usually gain an extra colony from a split around this time of year, however I have one nuc which I've been trying to get to raise their own queen which isn't working and I have two very strong colonies so would like an additional hive. I was planning on taking some bees from the strong hive...

    Buying a queen

Hi, I am looking to split my hive. Who would you recommend to supply me with a new queen? How much would I be looking to pay and how long does she usually take to arrive? Thanks!

    Still going up

Hi guys I am not sure why one of my hives will not use the bottom brood box which is full of new comb, the queen still wants to go up into the super and lay there. (Yes, I know I can add a QE, it's still the same if I have one on, they don't use the bottom) Should I try adding some of the...

    Splitting to multiply

Hi all, What is the easiest way you would recommend I split my two strong, hives which are on double brood? I would be interested in a method using a Queen bought in and raising my own.. I wouldn't trust the post at the moment though. I've split successfully before but only when it's to...

    Help, mead question!

Thanks, I will be adding 1.5k of honey for a 5 gallon jar,I am adding lemon and yeast too. If it won't do any harm I would prefer to leave the wax in to save introducing any pathogens by removing and straining again, unless I re boil but that might weaken the taste further.

    Help, mead question!

Hi all, I am finishing off my mead today but it's the first time I am making it and I am not sure if I should carry on. I decided to wash some of my clean cappings which had honey left in them in some cold water, I then filtered the liquid and heated to a boil and skimmed off the 'scum'. Now...

    Winter disruption

Thanks, I'll get the Payne's crown boards and take off the super, hopefully this will sort it if I get some fondant in

    Winter disruption

This is my worry, being too invasive. I don't have enough spare full frames to make a complete super, I might take out the empty ones, put fondant on the top bars below in the brood box and fill the space with insulation? Yes, the full ones are in the outside.

    Winter disruption

Thanks, There are various reasons I decided not to nadir this year, from my hefting they should be heavy enough however I am just a bit paranoid, plus there is some empty frames in the super. I don't have an eke as they are poly and I'm not much of a DIY'er. I will put an empty super on top...

    Winter disruption

Hi I want to go into my hives and remove a few empty super frames (on top of brood box) to replace with some full ones or put fondant on the top bars. I've not gone in over winter before and an concerned about the disruption this may cause? Thanks

    Extraction and honey

Hi, I use a method where I take off all the honey and comb and let it drain through muslin over a bucket. Could this be why all why homey is now cloudy and set? Because of the wax particals? Thanks

    Super under bb

Hi guys, My current set up is double brood, however, there hasn't been any laying in the bottom bb. I am starting to finalise my winter plans. I have supers on all hives which are at various stages of untouched, partially filed or capped. If I put super frames in the bb beloe the main nest...

    Cappings and honey ji

Thanks, really helpful! I have made many mistakes when harvesting honey at home, they can smell even the smallest of honey/wax for miles!

    Cappings and honey ji

Hi guys I have a bucket with a mix of cappings and honey? How do I separate the Honey from the cappings? I have heard methods of putting them inside tights, for example and hanging it for the honey to drip out? would it the easiest process be to put them inside of some sort of material or...
