Guidance on "use" of Swarm Queen Cells

Of the 8 sealed cells I have been able to give 4 of them to local beekeepers that have found they have queenless colonies for whatever reason. So the bees work in creating these queens has not gone to waste. And the local beekeepers have got local "mongrel East Riding Queens" 😎 I will maintain...

Guidance on "use" of Swarm Queen Cells

Whoops! Complete into a well known beekeeper phrase or saying. Ask any three beekeepers and get ............. answers. But answers are always welcome for the inexperienced because we learn just how many combinations of what might happen there are and then we can worry about which one we have...

Guidance on "use" of Swarm Queen Cells

Thank you very much for your prompt and precise reply. Swarm occurred yesterday. As I have the equipment and know the original queen is not in the hive with the QCs (having collected the swarm AND searched the colony AND found no V Queens. or torn down cells etc.) I think I will try the actions...

Guidance on "use" of Swarm Queen Cells

A bit of guidance on use of queens created by colonies in anticipation of swarming I may be totally wrong about what I can or cannot do. 1. One of my colonies has swarmed. I collected and hived the swarm. 2. I now have colony from which the swarm emerged left with 8 sealed lovely Queen cells...

    Maqs - bad news

My understanding is that MAQS and FormicPro are two different formulations. Accordingly there are some differences in their instructions for use. It would be a mistake to conflate, confuse or mix the directions for use issued with each product. I feel the actions/precautions I took whilst...

    Maqs - bad news

Two strips as stated on pack. Usually I am treating 4 to 6 hives / colonies. 1. Single National B. Box 2. OM floor. Instructions say "Screen bottom board should be closed off during treatment to optimize efficacy." But I leave the "varroa count inspection (bottom) board" out/off the hive. I...

    Maqs - bad news

I have used Maqs for years on Nationals without any problems. Lots of space, supers, ekes on, ventilation OM floor etc. etc. follow instructions on pack. Make sure weather will be within temp. range. Apply first in evening when temps. will be lower (does this mean slower release?). Some...

Where do you get 8mm strips of wood?

I go to B+Q and Wickes and pick up the stacking strips they use to stack timber on. (more likely to be laid around on the floor or on top of half finished stacks in B+Q). It is often 7, 8 or 9 mm. (Different widths but narrow enough strips for crown boards etc.) Measure it! Take it to the...

    Alighting Boards

I use a length of arris rail. The triangular shape allows a slight slope at the entrance so snow etc. less likely to stay and obstruct entrance. Also easily removed and narrow enough to not obstruct stacking storing. Skips can be a great source of off cuts.

    Plant identification thread

I had one of these. It is a prolific "self seeder". This year I had tens of seedlings popping up out of the pebbled driveway alongside where it had grown.
