    Bit of advice please.

Afternoon all. Just been through my colonies, in one of them I found 2 charged queen cups on the very edge of the brood nest. The colony is a little smaller than my others it has 6 frames of brood vs my other 3 at 8-9 frames of brood. My first thought was to AS them but then it struck me it...

    Bailey comb change timing.

Afternoon all, I've got two colonies which I'd like to perform Bailey comb changes on. Having never done it before I was after a bit of advice on when is a good time to do it? Both colonies are on 5-6 frames of bees(just looking through the crownboard) & are in poly hives. Cheers.

    Drones still present.

Morning all, went round my hives and put mouse guards on yesterday. All very busy & still bucket loads of pollen coming into all 4 hives. I also noticed drones were still coming & going freely in 3 out of the 4 hives. Is this indicative of a problem, not that I can do much about it now or do...

    Bit of a disaster.

Not sure why I'm posting other than it being cathartic! Anyway, inspected my strongest colony following the varroa treatment to assess stores etc. All good, low varroa drops, 7 frames of brood, loads of bees & spotted the queen. I had decided to leave them a super for the winter so removed qx...

Queen cell, multiple eggs & a queen.

Afternoon all. I have colony which was the 'parent' part of an AS. On inspecting today I found a couple of things which to my mind was a bit strange. So, a bit of background first. This was an AS on 1st July, the new queen began laying roughly 5 weeks after the AS. They currently cover between...

    Frames left partially filled?

Afternoon all, I've noticed in some of the super frames above the brood nest have maybe a third of the frame left empty in semi circle ringed with pollen. They have left this section empty for as long as the super has been on. I'm not concerned but just interested as to why they do it. Is it...

A bit of advice re queen cups please.

Afternoon everyone, I have a colony which I purchased as 6 frame nuc back at the end of May, 23rd to be precise. It's now just had its second super added. During my last inspection I found 3 or 4 queen cups with just eggs in them, no royal jelly. So I left them as they were, after doing a bit...

    Closing up during spraying.

Morning everyone, just had a call from the farmer to say he'll be spraying the beans in the field my bees are in. They intend to spray them tomorrow maybe in the afternoon/evening apparently it depends on the weather during the day. I intend to close them up tonight & open them up again...

    Mobile phone masts.

Morning all, I know this has been discussed previously & I have been through some old posts, but as most of the posts are several years old I wondered what the current feeling towards them is? I have been offered a nice site by a local farmer but there is a phone mast about 150m from where the...

    Varroa advice.

Hello everyone, this is my first few months beekeeping. I aquired a colony at the end of March & have been monitoring the daily Varroa drop. The colony seems weak to my inexperianced mind, just about on 6 frames with 4 of brood. As far as I know they had Apigurd in autumn & OA in winter...

Can anyone help with a site for my bees in Leicestershire?

Morning everyone, to cut a long story short I used to keep bees up until I was about 18 or 19 & now in I'm going to start again. YAY! I've got a nuc on order but for various reasons I now have nowhere to site the new hive. BOOO! My garden is just a little to suburban I think. Not a problem...

    Hello everyone.

Hi eveyone. I'm Matt from Leicestershire, I kept bees from the age of 15ish up to age 20ish. For various reasons I had to give it up, now in my late 30's I'm in a postion to get started again. I've dug out all my old books, bought some new ones & have realised I've forgotten so much!! So in...
