    buying a mircoscope

Well I would be worried about buying a beginning microscope in the first place. It won't be long before the disadvantages of such a microscope come apparent. That said my first (adult) microscope cost 100 punt; it was mococular, X4, X10, X40 objectives and I got X10 and X15 eyepieces. There was...

    buying a mircoscope

Using Yates as an example he states that before you can declare a sample as free you must not have found a spore in 5 distinct fields of view. That is using a narmal microscope with X10 WF eyepieces. To do that with one of these microscopes with threir restricted view mean that one must examine...

    buying a mircoscope

The field of view is far too small to examine slide for nosema if the infection level is low if the slide is covered in spores then you will see them with this.

    buying a mircoscope

First off: you won't get X1280 magnification with these lenses with any degree of definition. It is really a toy and not suited for serious work as the field of view is too small.

    Want a cheap microscope ?

Not really you need X400 or larger for pollen. Some of Sawyers criteria are only visible at X600, Hodges mentions that for surface detail you need oil immersion (X1000)

Removing melted wax from stain;ess steel

A firend of mine recently tried washing a cappings bowl with boiling water. She also tried tis on a metal sieve. The result, as we all know, was that there is now a coating of melted wax on the bowl and sieve. I recommended that she tries hot water with a good handful of washing soda. Any other...

Where can i get acetic acid 80% ?

I don't think glacial acetic acid and acetic anhydride are thee same thing at all. Acetic anhydride is used among other thing for the acetolysis process in pollen analysis and is quite dangerous to handle.:nono: Ruary

    Afb

Well if it is only the empty jars, give them a good soak in Domestos diluted 1:9 and leave them soak for at least 30 minutes.

    Afb

not without destroying the honey. The best (most accurate) quote I ever heard on AFB was that AFB is a very serious bee disease. However, it is very difficult to infect a colony with it; BUT beekeepers seemed to be very good at doing just that!

    gormanston 2013

Well I didn't gain nor lose any weight, a matter of asking for small portions. I gather the Education Board is considering having the Senior Exams available in provincial centres. As I was examing, which were done in the evening after supper,I didn't notice the gap in the evenings but I though...

    Cleaning slides?

Depends what the slides are and what they are mounted with: Glycerine Jelly Muswell's recipe will work soak in the water for a long time. Canada Balsma or Numount not really woth the while smears be ver careful, you don't know what pathogens you might be dealing with. If the slides are sealed...

    Nosema

I know Randy talks about a sample of ten bees as did Cantwell but they are both looking for an infection rate (prevalence) of over 40%. For a sample of 10 bees the 95% confidence limit is between 0 and 44%. So you would not expect to be able to make comparitive measurements with a prevalence of...

    Nosema

Yes the number is correct Cantwell used 1 ml/bee, and the COLOSS book which is being published in parts for them by IBRA. uses two criteria one examination of bee individual abdomens to get percentage infection but they admit that this is prolonged and troublesome. the other is mashing the...

    Nosema

Different magnification to the first shots shown in the original post. Did you use the same amount of water/ bee when doing the second checks? It is still a seroius infection. RE an earlier post Randy's quick squash method is a form of sequential testing and he is testing for an infection rate...

WHY are all my pics out of focus??

I would have thought camera shake but the exif data states 1/160 sec which should prevent it. Camera too close for focus, did you get a 'green light' on the focus? Try using flash to prevent camera shake.

    Springwatch

Honeybees do not make holes in flowers to get at nectar, their mouthparts are not strong enough. Bumble bees do and honey bees can and do make use of the 'shortcut' to get at the nectar. Of course if they do that they do not get pollen.
