    Melting down old frames

A return to this thread because i have solved the mystery :) If you pour mixed hot wax and water through a sieve into a bucket, make sure there is no cold water in the bucket already, otherwise the wax instantly cools and solidifies into nasty brown sludge. Pour into an empty bucket to get a...

    Insurance against theft of hives?

I spoke to my house and contents insurers and they agreed to insure up to 4 hives within the existing premium. I made sure they added a note of this on their file.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

First swarm call. Bees coming through light fittings, through roof hatch into kitchen, taped up extractor fan. Having to rush in through door past a cloud of bees. HEEEELP. Arrived an hour and half later to find nada, nothing, zilch. Not a bee in sight, and no it wasn't 1st April :)

    Cleaning QE

Thanks for all the tips. I'll try a soft wire wire brush with heat as i don't like using the chemicals.

    Cleaning QE

Who said anything about a plastic QE? These are the nice metal ones with rods

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Transferred a colony onto a new floor and BB but couldn't find the Q anywhere. Eventually closed up everything, and put lid back on, only to see a small ball of bees under the hive! Sure enough there she was. Popped her back in the hive, Phewee!

    Cleaning QE

What is the best way to clean wax off a queen excluder? After scraping off most of the wax, I set about the remaining wax with a blow torch. Is this a bad idea? It left a coating of wax on the rods which might have narrowed the gaps, resulting in the bees not being able to squeeze through...

    Borage planting

I have bought just 150g of seed. Not sure if I'll be labeling it as borage honey then :)

    Borage planting

I've just take delivery of enough borage seed for 100m2. I'm going to try a small experiment. 1. Provided I have good germination, will that be enough to make the slightest difference to my honey crop with 5 hives? 2. How near/far should I plant it from the hives?

    The Taxman

This forum is VERY friendly but you should really search a topic before posting. There are some really useful threads on this subject already. Good luck :)

    Bee-House

In the Spring, I was thinking of setting up a shelf in the garden shed for putting developing nucs on, but I can't decide on the best way to connect the nuc entrances to the outside world. Any suggestions?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Started putting together some ancient T commercial boxes which I acquired. Liberal use of mallet needed to get the box joints to fit. My poor ears are ringing. I should have used earplugs. They look very smart now, though :)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-30295762 So, even the BBC have noticed this honey marketing nonsense, or should I say "Honey flavoured" nonsense....

    Forest beekeeping

I have been offered an out apiary in a large area of well managed forest, mixed conifer/deciduous. It is quite a way (7 miles) from where I live so will need to be worth while. Is this likely to be good for forage? The deciduous trees are mainly oak and beech with some sweet chestnut, and there...

    2014 Honey Survey BBKA News

I saw that typo too. I think you just have to get over it... Personally I find the continual mixing of "To" with "Too" and confusion over "Off", "Of", "have" on this forum mildly annoying but as I'm not perfect I ignore it (mostly) :)
