    What is the best filler.......

As H, said, certainly would not mess about with filler of any sort. Appleby Wood Turning do a special service for bespoke plugs, up to 40mm will use timber that you supply. Don't know about price but they are very competitive for cutting tools. Have a look on their web site.

Hive Nails. Which type would you recommend?

Not been around for a while, been busy on the beer hobby, getting stock up before summer. I use lost head galvanised, or air nails, with polyurethane glue. Gorilla glue is good, but you pay for the name in my opinion For good prices. Have a look here S

    Mesh Floor Nuc ?

I made up a simple seed box type tray which the nuc can be stood on. Never thought of it but the tray upside down would solve the heat loss problem S

    Western Red Cedar: supplier found!

Thankyou very much for posting that information Paul. Looks very interesting I will be giving the man a ring. I have been using "redwood" for my hives from a large local firm but the quality is not a good as I would like for the purpose. I find it amazing that 180 members have read the post and...

    Feeder fatalities

I have use a weir type and did not have any problems. I thought the idea was to let the bees into the main areas once the level was virtually down to the base ? I have also used a Bros. Adams type and even raised the bowl a few mm to let the bees out, again when the level was down? Is the B.A...

    How Much is Your Honey?

12 oz jars seems to be the way to go, saw some in the local butchers, £3.95, thought "thats reasonable" and then read the label. S

    Diy hive plans

Thanks for the reply. :) Yes, know what you mean about mixing measurements. The National hive was designed Imperial and fits in nicely with old timber sizes, now we have gone metric supplied timber has "shrunk" a shade, ;) making thing a bit harder. I like working with mm, and am old enough to...

    Diy hive plans

Welcome to the forum. I have used Dave Cushman's site and the Scottish Beekeepers, but excellent. Unfortunately I may found an anomaly, if I have interpreted things right. Dave's site says to set the side wall up 9mm from the base, but this only leaves 15mm up top for the frame lugs and runners...

    bees underatack by wasps

I say Toby, whats the best technique for getting rid of wasps nests ? I have a small nuc in the garden, settled here as a free "bee" :) but the stripey boys have taken over another nuc, left lurking next to the workshop, lesson learnt. :willy_nilly: S

    DIY Extractor

Here it is "part" finished. In a hurry to get it working to extract last week, lost my rape crop due to no extractor ! I used a quick fix plastic valve which is fine, but may do a stainless one over the winter. Drive arrangement and inside. The drive handle is quite a lash up to say the...

    DIY Extractor

I say H. isn't the the target speed for an extractor about 300 r.p.m, 800 will self destruct or go into orbit I would think  :) I have finished my extractor, well its been in use, but needs a bit more work to be really "finished ". Runs very well and next part of project is to go...

    Storing supers over winter

I seem to remember that supers should/can be stored with a sheet of newspaper between them, presumably with a sealed crown board or something on top ? Does anyone see any benifit / problem with wrapping the whole pile in "pallet wrap", an industrial type of cling film ? S

Hello John..... Got a new Nail-gun?

I have used an Aldi 18g nailer for ages, works great. Have just bought a 16g silverline, "cheap" but has done the job so far and yes you can fire nails out of the side instead of straight in if you are not careful, like you can you also make hives the wrong size "if you are careful." :) s

    Bait Hive

At the weekend I brought one of my brood boxes with old foundation back home from my out apairy, with a view to renewing the foundation. As expected there have been bees around for a few days nosing in new nucs which I had baited with some of the old frames, to see what happened. Today Mrs. S...

    Advice for a council tennant

Sincere good luck with your bees, Ms ajb, I am luck enough to have a nice out apiary and would not want bees in my garden, as others have said, fought with problems. I have been sorting out an old empty hive at home and loads of bees have appeared these last few days and the nearest ones to my...
