    Bees and guttering. Advice needed

If they are fat and fluffy, they are probably bumble bees, not honey bees http://www.bumblebee.org/lifeMate.htm

    Post AS...

A queen who is not mated will turn into a drone layer. A couple of years ago when we had bad weather, it took a month for one of my queens to get out of the hive for her mating flight. But waiting a month is pushing it

    Queens not laying!

Got two hives. One queen took her time to start laying this spring and is now doing OK but not as good as I would wish. The other has slowed down considerably the past few weeks and I am getting worried about this one. Neither are 'black' queens which usually lay less Very few drone cells...

Bee Keeper wanted - offer of land for bee keeping

What a kind offer - sadly I am too far away in Lancashire. But should any other farmers wish to make it known that they would like hives on their land, I am sure this forum would welcome it

    Upcoming weather

Yes, bitter wind here too in Preston Lancashire. Some hail this morning. Rain this afternoon and glimpses of sunshine. But it's that wind that's keeping the bees in. Brrrrr

    Backache and beekeeping

Get yourself a good body belt - search 'Images for lifting heavy objects belt'. You will need one that fits your size. Some designs are made for either men or women as their waist shapes can be different. When lifting a heavy super don't lift the whole box, but split the box by putting some...

    Sugar for free !

I've tried local larger supermarkets for the excess doughnut sugar. Asbo refused point blank, one branch of Sanesbury's give their sugar to a local beek (and only him) whereas another Sanesbury refused due to health and safety bla bla So, has anyone got an official letter from any of the...

What if a drone was fed royal jelly??

I had a drone layer once and the bees tried to make q cell out of it. The 'Kingcup', I don't know what else it would be called, grew to quite a size, but bent and misshapen I tore it down and dealt with the laying worker(s). I do have an old photo, but I will have to get help to show me how...

Never thought about the towels drawing in moisture from the outside, just inside. I'll try the Kingspan or Rockwool, or search out some old carpet

Wettest area in the UK? I'm fed up of it. Every time I look at the weather forecast of the UK there is ALWAYS a rain cloud right over where my house is! No wonder we had so many cotton mills yonks ago And yes, I do insulate above the crown board with old towels.

So what am I doing wrong? I have previously put fondant on top of the crown board covering the feeder holes. Also fondant on top of the super frames Bees have OMF but I still get problems with mould.

    Varroa natural mite drop

Last week I had to uncap 6 supers and 3 brood frames due to a drone layer and did not find a single varroa mite. I've only been beekeeping for 4 years, but have never seen such little varroa drop. Neither have I seen so few wasps around - could there be a connection here?
