    Swallows nests destroyed

Er... No. You are legally required to stop after an accident. http://www.lawdonut.co.uk/law/personal-law/personal-injury/road-traffic-accidents And, er... No. It is not against the law to not report a crime. http://www.findlaw.co.uk/law/criminal/crime_victims/500076.html

    Swallows nests destroyed

As a deeply law abiding citizen, I was most surprised when I got told by the police, in writing, that they would not investigate my hit and run accident, as I wasn't hurt. Despite me having to pay out my excess, and a crime being committed. In future I will take the law into my own hands! As...

    Poor bumbles

This. Bumble queens have evolved to track down disused mouse nests. Which is why you should put some old mouse nest material (from a pet shop) in any bumble box you have.

    Poor bumbles

I am removing a bumble nest later this week. I will use a bee vac and suck out all the flyers. Then reunite them with their nest ball once extracted and relocate them. To the unaware it could look like I am disposing of them...

    Bees are rebelling

Stop throwing the boxes around and start being nice to them?!?

    Suggestions/solutions?

I agree with Erica 100% Whilst following her instruction, when you remove the excluder, take a look at it. It may be a 'one sided excluder' ie turn it one way for top bee space and the other for bottom.

    What next - double brood 14 x 12 ?

Pargyle, nice photos fella, but you may want to replace the bubble in your spirit level... Those poly's are looking a bit donkey.

Buckfast or Carnica ... Which to choose?

Bear in mind there are a lot of beekeepers out there doing A/B breeding. And trying to saturate the area with drones from only their best colonies... Not just for themselves - but for everyone relying on mating flights instead mail order. Keep nice bees, breed from the best, don't import... Simples.

laying workers in swarm. Maybe !!

The reason you shake out laying workers is the laying worker can't fly, so unable to return to the hive. What makes you think they can fly to swarm? And why do you think bees would swarm without a queen? Clipped queen, failed swarms return to hive, they don't continue... Interested to hear...

    Rabid Vampire Bees!!!

I walk around mine without a veil, just because I don't need it, definitely not this early in the season... Sounds like yours are getting narky. Has anything happened recently? Thunderstorm? Heavy machinery? Woodpecker?

    Artificial swarm does it work

Ah! I understand a little better. Simple answer is tough luck! If the bees decide they are going to swarm you are along for the ride! Personally I would go with it and combine at the end of the year for a strong winter colony with a new queen. Otherwise you are literally fighting one of the...

    Artificial swarm does it work

That's because an AS is NOT prevention, it is control. Just recombine on the new (by then proven) queen at the end of the year. Everyone's a winner.

    Artificial swarm does it work

Is it just me, or is the AS being made overly complicated here? In an AS you want the same result as a swarm. Old queen and flying bees in a new box. Brood, nurse bees and stores in the old box, with one good queen cell. It is really easy to achieve this and stops swarming. (Remembering to...

    New bee need of help

Pargyles post is on the money. But Hivemakers is just as important, a five frame nuc should have 3 frames of brood and lots of bees. If it is only one frame of brood and lots of bees it's very weak and shouldn't be being sold really. You shouldn't put these in a full hive as it's too big. If...

Just imagining bottled water with added salt being marketed... I don't think it'll catch on!

    Split a hive?

That's great news, but don't just hand over the reins there. Now starts your learning curve. Get the Beek to explain what they are doing and why. Make sure they let you get your hands dirty. And read read read. You've just started a very exciting journey.
