Managing your bees alongside looking after your dog

I'm with Oliver 90 "leave at home" - from experience. HIves located approximate to Dog Pen. No problems for some years and then in midst of manipulation bees trapped dogs in shed and the three were very badly stung (covered). I suspect had they not been released would have been overcome. Vet had...

    Overwintering queens in min nucs

Did it last winter with apedia and three apedia supers - came through well and the wee core group is now a strong colony/hive with same queen leading through this winter. Had a spare Q again this august in Apedia (double only) but failed just after Christmas -too small to withstand the freeze...

    Best Book

Our association recommends for beginners - Bees at the bottom of the garden followed by (the intense) Hooper.

    Modern bee keeping books

Second MADASAFISH's nomination - The Pocket Book is practical and very detailed. Have recommended it to many.

    Ophelia

If so they would have returned with forage to apiaries in Wales! Now that would be a tale.

    Levelling a hive

Agree with Hachi. - increasing angle could lead to slippage of Upper B Box or super(s) or allow water ingress ... I use wedges or thin cut off slips to remedy. Oh by the by touch of OCD here too. 😊

    ApiG & Queens off lay

I anticipate Q's reducing activity on the application of ApiG. Last season it was more pronounced but I note this season on last inspection that 5 colonies have zero eggs/larvae with Q's roaming about. Any similar experiences ?? Tried Maq's on four colonies without issue.

    bringing on a queen

Is it the decline in numbers or their genetic contribution that is dodgy. Have two apedias with Virgins on board going into 2nd week - not hopeful as I see drones being expelled - few hives have some still. Imagine the DCA is somewhat lonely and with arthritic drones.

    Queen Cells in drone-laying colony

If Laying workers one can find them in desperation attempting to make Q Cells with drone larvae. I have heard of them being called King Cells . Its unclear if you have DLQ or LW's - the latter is neigh impossible to remedy.

What goes in the feeder slot?

I'm with EricaHB on this one. Lost many bees through drowning despite applying paint/sand mix to give them grip and used the float - never again. If use the block as referred by Hive-maker it will keep them out. I tape over the feeder with masking tape as it's a nuisance if they enter during...

    Cupkit & 24 hours - no eggs

Ahhhhh "middle of the nest" no! It was closer to back for less disruptive access. Back in tomorrow so. May attempt grafting but eyes are old and ha liability for fine work. Thanks P.

    Cupkit & 24 hours - no eggs

Queen 24 hours in cup kit and not a single egg. A prolific layer and last year took to Cups like a pro. Seasoned the cage for two days (and brushed cells with syrup) any suggestions as to why failed this occasion - have I missed something?

Queen cell in my top super

Hi PMat - Well for what it's worth today noted a single loaded Q Cell in the midst of a super. THis was a swarm and the super was last years 'wet' and above Qx - only possibility was the carrying up of egg from the (only being drawn) brood box - so in support of your thesis for "Have egg will...

Queens in bother - stung & balled

During manipulation marked Queen and placing her back on quiet part of brood frame a bee jumped her head and stung her - sprayed water and separated them but Q was fairly dazed and staggering about the frame -didn't look to good going down between frames - anticipate the worst. Next hive looking...

    Making own foundation

Have any members experience (good & bad) with using a silicone foundation press (as advertised) to make their own foundation - using the wax from apiary. Would be obliged to hear if it does what says on tin.

    EMERGENCY sheep/bee attack...

Millet - Was scarey as the old guy was quite literally covered - Vet advised as you have but in the circs (plus time/distance) with the caution went for the 1/2 tab. Will give him the benefit .....

Queen cell in my top super

Lucky you - Having shaken bees from all brood frames to check for QC's - some days later swarmed out. Autopsy found sealed QC in super - had been used earlier as brood & half but moved to double brood - missed it and an expensive mistake. You single brood? Check for warp in Qx ?

    EMERGENCY sheep/bee attack...

I have a dog pen/run close to the hives. During a manipulation I heard barking and howls - went to investigate and found that bees had cornered the three dogs in their shed and were picking them off. I released the animals whom vanished to the house (in panic tore through the house pulling...

    Losing the will

I also have drawn up the items for sale list by reason of sheer anguish and frustration. Only today on arriving at the apiary did I see the tail end of a swarm heading out over the fields. Oh the frustration after the medication, the syrup, the fondent, the stings and indeed, time applied to the...
